Aggressive Second Half Not Enough to Overcome Lobos

The Redhawks outscored the Lobos 38-36 in the second half.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Southeast Missouri women's basketball team fell to New Mexico (3-4) Saturday evening in the consolation game of the New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament, 73-55. Southeast falls to 2-6 this season and comes up winless in the tournament.
 
Southeast played very aggressively in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome a hefty deficit set by the Lobos in the first half.
 
"We started the game sluggish and we put ourselves in an up-hill battle early but I was very pleased with our performance in the second half," said head coach Ty Margenthaler. "Despite our performance on the weekend, we can learn a lot going forward in the season."
 
The Lobos wasted no time getting out in front of the Redhawks, going up 9-0 in just over three minutes of play. By the 12-minute media timeout, Southeast was able to slow the Lobo offense and battle to 13-6.
 
Both teams went on a slight scoring drought as neither team scored for a solid minute and a half. The Lobos ended the scoreless period with two made free-throws to go up by nine.
 
The Redhawks were held to six points for nearly five minutes until Kara Wright drained a jumper to end the Redhawks scoreless period, 20-8 New Mexico.
 
The Redhawks found themselves down 24-10 at the five-minute mark.
 
Jordan Hunter drained the Redhawks first three-pointer of the contest with 3:28 left in the opening half. Brianna Mitchell was quick to record a three-pointer of her own, 30-16.
 
The Redhawks found themselves in a 20-point deficit at halftime, down 37-17 to the Lobos.
 
At the half, Olivia Hackmann and Wright each led the Redhawks with four points. Hunter and Mitchell each had three. Patricia Mack was tied for a game-high five rebounds in the opening half.
 
The Redhawks were forced into eight turnovers while forcing five on New Mexico.
 
Antiesha Brown (11) and Sara Halasz (10) were the game's only double-digit performers for the Lobos. Halasz was on the cusp of a double-double performance with seven rebounds to go along with her 10 points.
 
Hunter quickly opened the second half with a big three-pointer.
 
By the first media timeout at 16 minutes, the Lobos had already committed six personal fouls.
 
Southeast was able to pull within 13 of the Lobos a couple times in the second half but struggled overcoming the large deficit.  
 
In a 32 second time span from 8:45 to 8:13, Southeast forced two turnovers and put up seven unanswered points to pull within 10, 54-45 Lobos.
 
The Lobos were quick to answer back with three-straight layups. 60-45 New Mexico.
 
Both teams went scoreless again for a minute and a half until New Mexico's Khadijah Shumpert drained a free throw at 3:51; 64-49, Lobos.
 
Mack, who had a season-high 13 rebounds, fouled out with 15 seconds left in the contest.
 
Hillary Lively closed the game with a jumper for the Redhawks to bring the final score to 73-55.
 
The Redhawks outscored the Lobos, 38-36 in the second half.
 
Wright ended the game as the Redhawks leading scorer with 15 points. Hackmann and Hunter each ended with 10 points to their names.
 
With 13 rebounds, Mack recorded 45% of Southeast's total rebounds. The next highest rebounder was Connor King with three.
 
Shumpert ended the game with 20 points for the Lobos. Brown (15) and Halasz (14) were the next highest scorers for New Mexico.
 
The Redhawks return to action Wednesday, Dec. 4, against regional rival Southern Illinois at 6:30 p.m. from the Show Me Center.
