Redhawks Host UT Martin in Final Home Match of 2013, Tuesday

Tuesday's match against UT Martin will be the final home match of the 2013 season.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri volleyball will begin the final week of the 2013 season as UT Martin comes to Cape Girardeau, Tuesday. Tuesday's final home match is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. and can be seen for free on the OVC Digital Network. Southeast Missouri will be looking for some revenge after dropping a very close, five-set match to the Skyhawks in Martin on Oct. 1.
 
Let's Review
Southeast Missouri fell to Murray State before defeating Austin Peay last week. Senior Emily Coon recorded 36 kills and hit .694 over the two matches. She committed just two errors on 49 attempts last week. Against Austin Peay, she recorded 17 kills and a career-best .810 hitting percentage. Senior Berkley Idel tallied a team-high 40 digs last week. She recorded 23 digs versus Murray State and had 17 against Austin Peay. Senior Julie Shives assisted on 91 kills last weekend, including 52 versus Murray State.
 
A Look Ahead
The 2013 regular season will come to a close Saturday, Nov. 16, as the Redhawks travel to Cookeville, Tenn. to take on East Division opponent Tennessee Tech in the regular season finale. The top eight teams in the Ohio Valley Conference will gather in Morehead, Ky. beginning Nov. 21 for the 2013 OVC Tournament. Morehead State clinched the 2013 OVC regular season title Saturday, also giving them the right to host the tournament.
 
OVC Offensive POW
Emily Coon was named adidas OVC Offensive Player of Week Monday. Coon recorded 36 kills as Southeast Missouri split a pair of matches. She made just two errors on 49 attempts for a .694 hitting percentage. Coon also tallied seven blocks last week. Against Murray State she had 19 kills, while hitting a then season-best .607. Coon followed that up with 17 kills and a career-best .810 hitting percentage.
 
Thank You Seniors
Southeast Missouri honored four seniors (Emily Coon, Berkley Idel, Julie Shives, Colleen Yarber) prior to Saturday's match against Austin Peay. Coon and Yarber combined for 28 kills against the Lady Govs, hitting .538 between them. Shives recorded 39 assists and Idel registered 17 digs for the Redhawks in the three-set sweep over Austin Peay.
 
Scouting Trip
UT Martin fell to Austin Peay and Murray State last week at home. Junior Allie Whimpey recorded 15 kills in each match. She hit .379 against Austin Peay and followed that with a .243 hitting performance against Murray State. She also led the team with seven blocks last week. Sophomore Amanda Crask registered a pair of double-doubles in the two matches. Against Austin Peay, she handed out 52 assists to go with 14 digs and six hills. She had 47 assists, 12 digs and seven kills versus Murray State. Madison Wessling had 20 kills in only seven sets last week while Chelsea Bowles led the Skyhawks with 37 digs, including 24 versus Murray State.
 
Stepping "Mile"stones
With Saturday's win over Austin Peay, head coach Julie Yankus earned her 50th victory at the helm of the Redhawks.
 
Playing a Wall
The Redhawks have consistently led the OVC in blocking this season. Southeast has tallied 290 blocks (126 solo, 328 assisted), 2.40 blocks/set. Taylor Masterson (1.07 blocks/set) ranks second in the OVC in blocking with Emily Coon (0.92 blocks/set) ranks 5th in blocking in the OVC.
 
1,000 Kill Club
Senior middle blocker Emily Coon recorded her 1,000th kill of her career in Oct. 16's match against Saint Louis. Coon currently sits outside the top-ten in career kills. In order to break the top-ten, she must record 160 more kills this season. Colleen Yarber is approaching the 1,000 kills mark and only needs 11 more to join Coon in the club.
 
Records Watch
Berkley Idel has broken the top ten list of career digs and now ranks sixth with 1,476 digs while Colleen Yarber has broken the top-ten in career attack attempts with 3,499 and now ranks sixth all-time. Meanwhile, Emily Coon is climbing the Assisted Blocks and Total Blocks list. Julie Shives ranks fifth on the career assists list with 4,487. In order to move up in the rankings, Shives needs to tally over 500 more assists to reach Southeast Hall of Famer Tuba Meto's 5,003 assists mark, who ranks fourth all-time.
