CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Erin Shulman showcased the dynamic skill the Southeast Missouri soccer team missed from its lineup last season on Sunday afternoon.
Shulman, who missed all but seven contests due to injury in 2012, scored both of the Redhawks' (4-4-2, 2-0-1 Ohio Valley) goals in their 2-0 win over Jacksonville State (4-8-1, 0-4 OVC) at Houck Stadium. It is the third time Shulman has scored two goals in a match and the first since netting a pair at Austin Peay on Sept. 23, 2011.
Southeast was dominant with the ball throughout the contest and pinned JSU in its defensive end for the majority of the first half. The Redhawks outshot the Gamecocks 11-1 and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kick attempts in the opening 45 minutes. Six of those shots were directed on goal, most of which were high quality scoring opportunities.
With time winding down in the half,
Kasey Crowden got all of a shot from just inside the 18-yard box on the left side. JSU keeper Taylor Hammond dove left to get her fingers on the ball, but the shot kept moving towards the net. Unfortunately for Southeast, the ball rolled to the post and stayed out of the net, leaving the contest still scoreless at the break despite Southeast's dominant play.
"I think we're playing pretty good soccer," Southeast head coach
Heather Nelson said. "We're moving well off the ball and our forwards are creating some dangerous chances. Sure we didn't finish some chances, but their keeper played a great game today."
The Gamecocks settled down at the start of the second half and created a tremendous opportunity when Kelsey Bright moved down the left side and fired a tricky sharp-angle shot that looked labeled for the upper 90.
Ashton Aubuchon, who hadn't seen much work to that point, made a strong diving save, punching the ball wide with her right hand to keep JSU off the board.
After that attempt, Southeast took the next five shots, all of which were stopped by Hammond.
Breana Beine herself had three good looks in that span in what was a strong five-shot performance for her.
The contest remained deadlocked until Southeast played a two-man game off a corner kick with under 25 minutes remaining. Shulman got a step on her defender and started cutting towards the goal before getting pulled down just inside the 18-yard box. Her hardnosed play drew a foul and put her one-on-one against Hammond for a penalty kick. Shulman won the encounter for her third goal of the season, giving Southeast a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.
"I wanted to run onto the field and hug Erin after that goal," Nelson joked. "But that would've probably gotten me a card."
JSU did create a couple of opportunities with two shots and a corner kick over the next 10 minutes, but was unable to solve Southeast's defense. The Redhawks put the match away in the 79th minute when Crowden started a counter attack and chipped the ball perfectly to a cutting Shulman behind the Gamecocks' defense. Shulman won a footrace with Hammond to the ball and tapped it into the empty net to cap the scoring.
Southeast outshot JSU 24-5 and enjoyed a 15-2 advantage in corner kicks. Shulman (seven shots), Beine (five) and
Natasha Minor (four) combined for 17 shots themselves.
Ashton Aubuchon was steady on the few occasions she needed to be, stopping all four shots she faced. Hammond turned aside 15 of Southeast's 17 shots on goal.
The Redhawks are 4-0-1 in their last five matches and take that unbeaten streak to Richmond, Ky., where they take on Eastern Kentucky in OVC play on Friday. Opening kickoff is at 3 p.m.
