CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri welcomes the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State to Cape Girardeau for the first Ohio Valley Conference inter-division match-up of the 2013 season Saturday, Oct. 5. Jacksonville comes into the match 3-0 in OVC play this season, 10-8 overall. First serve is scheduled of 2 p.m. on Saturday. Southeast will also kick off its annual Dig For Life campaign.

Let's Review
The Redhawks fell to the Skyhawks of UT Martin Tuesday in a close, five-set match that Southeast had in their grasp but UT Martin prevailed, delivering Southeast their second loss in conference play. Southeast Missouri opened OVC play with a five-set win over Eastern Illinois Friday. The Redhawks were able to hold their own and close out the match to kick conference play off with a win and in front of over 1,000 fans. SIUE came to Cape Saturday on a mission to take down the OVC West favorites and they succeeded. The Redhawks failed to get their offense going as the Cougars came out on top 3-1.

A Look Ahead
Southeast Missouri will begin its first OVC road swing in 2013 next weekend as they travel to Austin Peay Oct. 11 followed by a quick trip to Murray State Oct. 12. Southeast will return home Oct. 16 for a non-conference showdown with regional rival Saint Louis.

Scouting Trip
Jacksonville State opened up OVC play by defeating Austin Peay, Murray State, and Tennessee Tech. Sophomore Emily Rutherford led the team with two double-doubles over the weekend. She finished with 13 kills and 13 digs against Austin Peay before recording 17 kills and 23 digs versus 17 kills and 23 digs. Junior Nicole Merget posted 17 kills and seven blocks against Austin Peay. She followed that up with 15 kills and six blocks versus Murray State. Senior Abbey Heredia recorded a pair of double-doubles over the weekend. She finished with 42 assists and 13 digs in the match with APSU. In the match with Murray State, She had 46 assists and 12 digs.

Seeing (and Thinking) Pink
With October upon the Redhawks, Southeast will begin its annual Dig For Life campaign. Dig For Life, started by Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator and former volleyball head coach
Cindy Gannon, was started to help provide mammograms for women who could otherwise not afford them. Dig For Life, in conjunction with Saint Francis Medical Center's Pink Up Cape campaign, has grown exponentially in the last few years. The Redhawks will debut their brand new pink jerseys Saturday against the Gamecocks and will continue to wear them for all home matches in October.

Playing a Wall
Southeast Missouri has consistently led the OVC in blocks this season. Southeast has tallied 156 blocks (66 solo, 180 assisted), 2.29 blocks/set.
Taylor Masterson (1.02 blocks/set) and
Emily Coon (0.93 blocks/set) rank 3rd and 6th in blocking in the OVC.

Start it Up
As a team, the Redhawk's offense ranks in the bottom half of the conference in hitting (.169 hitting percentage) and ranks last in kills (11.03 kills/set); however, individually,
Emily Coon ranks fourth in the OVC in hitting percentage (.305) and
Colleen Yarber ranks fourth in the kills category (200; 3.28 kills/set).

There's No Place like Home
Julie Yankus, now in her third season at the helm of the Redhawks, has garnered a 16-6 record at the friendly confines of Houck Field House. In home openers, she is 3-0 and 15-5 in OVC matches at home.

4,000 Assist Club
Senior setter
Julie Shives is now a member of the 4,000 assist club at Southeast Missouri. Shives ranks fifth on the career assists list with 4,083. In order to move up in the rankings, Shives needs to tally almost 1,000 more assists to reach Southeast Hall of Famer Tuba Meto's 5,003 assists mark, who ranks fourth all-time.Â
