NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a tough loss to Belmont Friday, Southeast Missouri volleyball (12-11, 4-4 OVC) turned around and defeated Tennessee State (7-12, 3-5 OVC) Saturday in four sets (25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16).
Andrea Baylin had a career day with a career-high 21 kills and a career-high hitting percentage of .400 in the match.
Â
"We ran a 6-2 offense today in order to have more offensive options and it worked really well for us," said
Julie Yankus. "In the 6-2, we always have three hitters in the front row and that allows us to have more options and be more efficient offensively."
Â
Southeast found itself on the winning side of the opening set for the first time this week with a 25-18 victory over the Tigers. The Redhawks took a comfy six point lead at 11-5 but TSU used a 6-1 run to eventually tie up the set at 17. After the Tigers tied it up, Southeast went on an 8-1 run to wrap up the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match. Baylin sealed the win with a service ace while also tallying five kills and a .556 hitting clip in the opening stanza.
Â
The second set proved more of a challenge for Southeast as the Tigers jumped out in front first. The Redhawks battled to tie up the set at 18. Down 23-19, Southeast used six straight unanswered points to steal the set away from Tennessee State and take a 2-0 lead.
Â
Coming out of the break and facing a Redhawk sweep, the Tigers kicked it in gear to narrow the Redhawk lead to 2-1 with a 25-20 set three win. The Tigers led the entire set. Baylin tallied her third five-kill set. Southeast, the best blockers in the conference, were out-blocked in the third set, 4-2.
Â
After dropping the third set and losing the possible sweep, Southeast shut down the Tigers in the fourth set with a 25-16 win to take the match. The set was tied at 10 before the Redhawks held TSU to only six more points as they went on to win the match. Baylin posted her fourth set of five or more kills in the set with six kills.
Â
Besides Baylin's double-double performance,
Berkley Idel tied a career-high in digs with 29.
Emily Coon hit .350 on the day with eight kills and five blocks.
Â
"Baylin had a great match and really played aggressive today. She found lots of ways to score from tooling the block, tipping, and swinging away," said Yankus. "Berkley had a great game as well. She really passed well and got us in system almost all of the time. Defensively, she was very scrappy and got us quality digs."
