On Tap
About Belmont – The Bruins find themselves in similar position to the Redhawks entering Friday's match, with seven points in the OVC standings (compared to Southeast's eight). Belmont has won two of its last three, scoring eight goals in the victories over Murray State and Jacksonville State. Allie Hick and Allison Alcott are tied for the team lead with three goals apiece as part of a balanced attack that has six players with two or more goals. Nicole Berner boasts a 2.11 goals against average in 12 starts.
About Tennessee Tech – The Golden Eagles are winless in their last four contests and have been shut out in three straight. Ellie Iaciofano's 10 points (3 G, 4 A) pace TTU and represent nearly a third of its offensive output. Jordan Brown leads the OVC with 89 saves (6.85 per match) and has two shutouts while holding a 2.05 goals against average.
Looking Back
Eastern Kentucky/Morehead State Recap – Ashton Aubuchon made five saves to notch her fourth solo shutout of the season in a scoreless tie at Eastern Kentucky last Friday, extending Southeast's unbeaten streak to six matches (4-0-2). That streak ended on Sunday as Morehead State rallied with four second-half goals after Southeast took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Natasha Minor and
Torey Byrd tallied first-half goals for the Redhawks to give them the lead, but Southeast only managed two shots in a scoreless second half. MSU turned the contest around by scoring three times in 1:13 to put Southeast down a pair and added an insurance goal late. The one-point weekend dropped Southeast to sixth in the OVC standings, the last spot that qualifies for next month's OVC Tournament.
News & Notes
Checking the Standings – With half of its conference schedule in the books, Southeast is a respectable 2-1-2 in OVC play. The Redhawks' eight points are one ahead of Belmont for the sixth and final seed in next month's OVC Tournament. In the first year of a 10-match schedule, Southeast earned the fourth seed by amassing 17 points in 2012. The final qualifiers for last year's tournament were Belmont and SIU Edwardsville with 14 points apiece, a total Southeast can hit with two wins this weekend. The Redhawks start the stretch run with four-straight home matches, where they are 2-0-1 this season.
Rare Breakdown – After allowing a total of two goals during a six-match unbeaten streak, the Redhawks had some costly defensive breakdowns in a 5-2 loss at Morehead State on Oct. 13. The five goals allowed tied for the most the Redhawks have ever yielded in a match. The only previous time that happened was in a 5-1 loss at Missouri State on Aug. 29, 1999, the second match of Southeast's inaugural 1999 season.
Moving Up – Ashton Aubuchon made seven saves in two contests last weekend. Those stops pushed her career total to 221, tying Amanda Wrzos for second most in school history. That total is seven shy of assistant coach Lindsay Pickering's school record of 228. She is also in the Redhawks' top five in career solo shutouts (second; 19), wins (third; 24) and goalkeeper minutes played (third; 4,658). Aubuchon currently leads the OVC with 7.17 saves per match.
Erin's Importance – Southeast's success has statistically depended on sophomore forward
Erin Shulman's production. Since arriving on campus in 2011, the Redhawks are 10-0-1 when Shulman scores a goal, but 4-13-4 when she is in the lineup and does not score a goal. The Normal, Ill., native missed 20 contests due to injury, with Southeast going 9-8-3 in her absence. This season, the Redhawks are 2-0-1 when Shulman finds the back of the net and 2-5-2 when she's held off the scoresheet.
