MURRAY, Ky. – The Southeast Missouri (10-10, 3-3 OVC) volleyball team defeated the Racers of Murray State (12-8, 2-4 OVC) Saturday in a three-set sweep (25-23, 25-22, 25-12). Southeast posted a season-high 17 team blocks in the sweep of the Racers.

The Redhawks missed an all-time record of 19 team blocks last set on Nov. 18, 1995. The last time Southeast posted 17 or more blocks in a single match was Oct. 7, 2011 at Austin Peay.

"I am very proud of our blocking today," said Julie Yankus. "We were very disciplined with our blocking, we communicated well about their offense and used our size to our advantage today. Our blocking forced them to make a lot of hitting errors and really shut down their offense. Kat came in and set her first full collegiate match and did a nice job distributing the ball to a lot of different hitters."

The Redhawks closed out a close opening set with a 25-23 set win. Southeast led most of the set but the Racers remained close and within striking distance but Southeast was able to hold on long enough for the crucial opening set win.

Southeast was able to open a comfy lead on the Racers in the second set, 11-5. Down 16-12, Murray surged with six straight points to take a lead on the Redhawks. Southeast was able to take back two points but Murray once again tallied four points to take a 21-18 lead. Down 22-19, the Redhawks closed out the second set with six unanswered points to win 25-22, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was all Southeast as they shut down the Racers 25-12. The Redhawks closed out the match with a 9-2 run.

The Redhawks posted 17 team blocks (seven solo, 20 assisted) to Murray State's one block. Emily Coon tallied eight blocks with four kills. Taylor Masterson tallied seven blocks with six kills of her own. Andrea Baylin led the Redhawk offense with eight kills and a .241 attack percentage with nine digs and six blocks. In her first career start, freshman setter Katarina Rotta assisted on 24 kills with three blocks and three kills in six attack attempts with eight digs.

Southeast welcomes non-conference regional rival Saint Louis to Cape Girardeau on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 6:30 p.m.
