Lady Govs Overcome Redhawks, 3-1

Austin Peay downed Southeast in four sets Friday evening.

Outside hitter Colleen Yarber proved valuable both offensively and defensively against the Lady Govs.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri (9-10, 2-3 OVC) volleyball team fell to Ohio Valley Conference West Division rival Austin Peay (7-14, 4-1 OVC) Friday evening in four sets (23-25, 24-26, 25-18, 20-25).
 
"We came out slow tonight," said Julie Yankus, "and Austin Peay was ready to attack and used numerous weapons against us. We just couldn't get them out of system enough tonight."
 
The Lady Govs took a quick lead in the match on a very tight opening stanza. While Southeast was behind early in the set, the Redhawks remained within striking distance. With the score tied a whopping 10 times in the set, both teams made a bid for the opening set win. With the score tied at 23 and Austin Peay with the serve, the Lady Govs were able to close out the first set on top, 25-23, and take a crucial early lead.
 
The Redhawks came out of the chute in set two with a 4-0 run but APSU quickly tied the set up at five. Neither team could get a run long enough to take a significant lead. Southeast was once again able to keep up with the Lady Govs to the point the set was all tied up at 24. Once again, Austin Peay used a pair of kills at the right time to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The score was all tied up a total of 13 times in the second set.
 
With their backs against the wall, Southeast opened up the third set with a very comfortable 10-2 lead but Austin Peay battled back to tie the score at 17. The Redhawks got hot and surged on a 5-0 run to conclude the set, 25-18, to stay alive in the match.
 
Austin Peay turned the tables on Southeast in the fourth set, opening a wide 11-4 lead. While the Redhawks were able to pull the score within 12-10, Austin Peay never relinquished the lead, taking the set, 25-20, and the match.
 
Colleen Yarber recorded 14 kills on the night, hitting .200, with 10 digs and two blocks. Emily Coon tallied 10 kills with two blocks of her own. Reigning OVC Defensive Player of the Week Andrea Baylin led the Redhawks in digs with 18 and also recorded seven kills and two blocks. Taylor Masterson was all over the net Friday with seven blocks; five solo, two assisted. As a team, the Redhawks recorded 13 blocks.
 
Southeast will play at Murray State Saturday at 2 p.m.
