RICHMOND, Ky. – Despite being unable to crack the scoreboard, the Southeast Missouri soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six matches with Friday afternoon's 0-0 tie at Eastern Kentucky.
The draw keeps the Redhawks (4-4-3, 2-0-2 Ohio Valley) unbeaten in conference play and they are 4-0-2 in their last six contests. Defensively, this is Southeast's third-straight shutout and fourth in the past five outings.
The Colonels (2-9-2, 1-2-1 OVC) created the bulk of the opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Redhawks 9-3 in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Ashton Aubuchon was sharp for Southeast, however, turning aside all four shots EKU placed on goal. Neither team was able to find the back of the net and the teams hit halftime with the score deadlocked at 0-0.
"We worked hard off the ball in the first half, but our execution wasn't as technical as it needed to be," Southeast head coach
Heather Nelson said. "As the game went on, we did a better job possessing the ball in the middle third of the field, while showing good composure in the penalty area."
Southeast found its legs in the second half and statistically dominated play. The Redhawks outshot the Colonels 7-0 in the final regulation period and also held a 3-0 advantage on corner kicks. The sights were a little off the mark as only two of Southeast's seven attempts reached the keeper, both of which were stopped by Samm Melton, sending the contest to overtime.
Neither team could find the golden goal in the first overtime period, though EKU held a 3-1 edge in shot attempts in the extra session. Aubuchon stopped the one Colonel shot that came her way to keep the contest going into double overtime. The Colonels took the only shot in the second overtime period, but it was off target.
EKU finished up with a slight 13-11 advantage in shots while Southeast took more corner kicks (7-5).
Erin Shulman fired four of the Redhawks' 11 shots, tying EKU's Nikki Donnelly for the match high.
Aubuchon made five saves for her second-straight solo shutout, her fourth this season. The senior now has 19 career solo shutouts and her 219 career saves are nine shy of Lindsay Pickering's school record of 228. Melton stopped all three shots she faced for EKU.
"Defensively, we played well as a unit," Nelson said. Ashton also had a strong performance against an experienced and talented team."
Southeast returns to the pitch on Sunday for an OVC tilt at Morehead State. Opening kickoff is at noon.
