Redhawks Use Balanced Attack In Sweep of Jacksonville State

The Redhawks swept the Gamecocks for the second time in their NCAA Division I history.

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team remained undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference play with a 3-0 (25-19, 30-28, 25-13) sweep of Jacksonville State Saturday evening. Southeast has now won six straight matches.
 
The Redhawks move to 12-6 overall and 4-0 in the OVC. Southeast is now off to their best start in conference play since 2000. The Gamecocks fall to 9-9 and 3-1 in the OVC.
 
“We were balanced and we had very good ball control and we spread the ball around well, “ said head coach Julie Folliard.
 
Julie Shives led the Redhawks with 37 set assists and a team-high 14 digs.
 
“Julie did a great job distributing the ball, “ said Folliard.
 
The Gamecocks jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the Redhawks in the opening frame. Southeast battled back to tie the match at 15-15.
 
The Redhawks closed out the opening stanza on a 10-4 run taking the frame 25-19. Southeast finished the first set with 15 kills hitting .297 as the Gamecocks hit .206.
 
JSU started off strong once again in the second frame hitting .429 halfway through the stanza as they looked to tie the match at 1-1.
 
Southeast rallied once again as they closed out the set on a 15-7 run to take the second frame 30-28. Shives paced the Redhawks during the run as Southeast took a 2-0 match lead.
 
“We served really aggressive and we really shut them down blocking wise during our run in the second set.” Said Folliard.
 
The Redhawks got off to a hot start in the third set jumping out to a 6-1 lead on their way to a 25-13 win. Southeast hit a match-high .341 in the frame. The Redhawks also added a match-high 17 kills.
 
Emily Coon led the Redhawks with 13 kills on the night. She also hit  .393 with only two errors. Brittney Kalinoski added 11 kills for Southeast.
 
Kelsey Keeve added a team-high five blocking assists.
 
The Redhawks return to action on Tuesday at Houck Field House for a non-conference clash with regional rival Arkansas State at 6:30 p.m.
