CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team heads to Jacksonville State Saturday evening for a showdown with the Gamecocks. Each team sits at 3-0 in the conference and in first place in their respective divisions. The Redhawks and Gamecocks split their season series last year with each taking contests at their respective facilities.
News and Notes:
Great Start
The Redhawks won their first two OVC matches for the first time since 2005 last weekend after their wins over EIU and SIUE. In 2005, the Redhawks defeated Murray State and UT Martin. The Redhawks moved to 3-0 in the OVC for the first time since 2001 with their win over UT Martin on Tuesday.
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team carries a record of 11-6 going into the Redhawks match up with JSU on Saturday. Southeast is off to their best start since 2000 when the Redhawks went 13-4 to open up the season. In 2000 Southeast went undefeated in the OVC and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Block Party
The Redhawks recorded a season-high 16 blocks against UT Martin on Tuesday evening at Houck Field House. It was the most blocks since Southeast recorded 17 last season at Austin Peay. The 16 blocks Tuesday were also the most in a match at Houck Field House Since 2003 against Memphis.
Preseason All-OVC
Junior middle blocker Emily Coon and junior setter Julie Shives were named Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference by OVC coaches and sports information directors. Coon was named to Preseason All-OVC in 2011 and earned postseason All--OVC honors as well.
Preseason Polls
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team was picked third in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll. The Redhawks received 192 points and two first place votes in this season's poll. Morehead State the defending OVC Champions were picked to win the league with 242 points and 22 first place votes. Newcomer Belmont was picked second with 198 points after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2011.
