CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri soccer team will return to the field for to host defending Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champion UT Martin on Tuesday night at Houck Stadium. Opening kickoff is at 6:30 p.m.
Quick Kicks
•Southeast is 6-4-3 all-time in Ohio Valley Conference openers and is 3-1-2 at Houck Stadium in conference openers.
•Including last year's OVC Tournament, UT Martin is 4-0-2 in its last six matches at Houck Stadium (1-0-2 vs. Southeast) dating back to 2008. The Skyhawks went 4-0 at Houck Stadium in 2011.
News and Notes:
Last Time Out – Southeast outshot Evansville, 18-9, over 110 minutes on Sept. 11, but the Redhawks were unable to find the back of the net in a scoreless tie.
Renee Kertz made four saves to post her second career shutout in the contest. Southeast then went to defending Conference USA Champion Memphis on Sept. 14 and fell 5-0 in its final tune up before OVC play.
Scouting UT Martin – The Skyhawks went 3-4-2 in non-conference play this fall with three of those losses coming against schools from the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference (Purdue, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State). Kendyl Wilson leads the defending OVC Tournament Champions with four goals and three assists. Her 11 points rank second in the conference. The Skyhawks are tied for the OVC lead with 1.89 goals per game while their 1.47 goals against average ranks sixth in the league.
Youth Soccer Promotions – September is National Youth Soccer Month and Southeast is running promotions during the month. Youth soccer players who show up at the gate wearing their jerseys get free admission to all of the Redhawks home contests this month. Southeast still has UT Martin (Sept. 25), Murray State (Sept. 28; Rec Team Night) and Austin Peay (Sept. 30; Free youth clinic after the match) on the slate this month. Abbott Plays…a Lot – Senior defender
Hayley Abbott has started all 64 matches Southeast has played since she arrived on campus, putting her five starts behind
Nikki Edwards' school-record 69. Abbott has also logged 5,648 minutes on the pitch (third most all-time), 276 behind the school record, which is also held by Edwards (5,924).
Kertz Fitting In – Renee Kertz has had little trouble adjusting to the pitch after spending four years starring for the Southeast softball team. Kertz started four-straight contests in net from Aug. 19-31, stopping 20 shots. She recorded a shutout in a 0-0 tie against Saint Louis in her collegiate soccer debut on Aug. 19 and picked up her first career win against Drake on Aug. 26. She got the starting nod in goal against Evansville on Sept. 11 and made four saves to notch her second shutout of the year.
