CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ­– The Southeast Missouri volleyball team opens up Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend with trips to Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville. The Redhawks opened up OVC play last year at EIU. The Redhawks and Panthers will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, a game that can be seen on the brand new OVC Digital Network. Southeast will face SIUE on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

News and Notes:

Road Warriors
The Redhawks end their 16 game road swing on Saturday against SIUE. Southeast will return home on Tuesday night to face OVC Rival UT Martin at 6:30 p.m. at Houck Field House.

Adidas OVC Offensive Player of the Week
Southeast Missouri redshirt freshman Taylor Masterson was named Adidas Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office. She finished the week with 39 kills averaging 2.44 per set. She hit an impressive .344 on the week and also added 13 blocks averaging 0.81 per set. Masterson, a native Chesterfield, Mo. is Southeast's first Offensive Player of the Week selection since Emily Hughes garnered the honor in 2009.

OVC Openers
The Redhawks hold a 13-7 record in OVC opener since 1992. Southeast has won four straight OVC openers dating back to 2008. Last season Southeast defeated EIU in the OVC Opener 3-0 by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-22.

Preseason All-OVC
Junior middle blocker Emily Coon and junior setter Julie Shives were named Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference by OVC coaches and sports information directors. Coon was named to Preseason All-OVC in 2011 and earned postseason All--OVC honors as well.

Preseason Polls
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team was picked third in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll. The  Redhawks received 192 points and two first place votes in this season's poll. Morehead State the defending OVC Champions were picked to win the league with 242 points and 22 first place votes. Newcomer Belmont was picked second with 198 points after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2011.

The Redhawks are 11-4 against the Panthers since 2005. Southeast took both matches from EIU last season. SIUE took two games from Southeast last year and the teams only meeting in 2010.
