CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The first road trip of the year is on tap for the Southeast Missouri soccer team. The Redhawks (1-2-1) head to Lexington, Ky., to compete in the Tropical Smoothie Invitational for the second year in a row. Southeast faces Louisville on Friday (4 p.m. CT) and host Kentucky on Sunday (1:30 p.m. CT)
Quick Kicks
•Southeast has a combined 2-1 record against Louisville (1-0) and Kentucky (1-1)
•This weekend marks the second consecutive season that the Redhawks have competed in Kentucky's Tropical Smoothie Invitational, they went 1-1 in 2011.
•Southeast is playing its first contests away from Houck Stadium this weekend. The Redhawks went 7-3-1 in road/neutral matches in 2011.
News and Notes:
Last Week – Southeast split the final two contests of its season-opening four-match home stand. After falling to UMKC, 1-0, on Friday night, the Redhawks rebounded for a 2-1 comeback win over Drake on Sunday.
Erin Shulman scored the tying goal on a penalty kick in the first half and
Courtney Luehmann tallied the game-winner with just over 30 minutes to play in the contest. Southeast's defense yielded only one shot attempt after Luehmann's goal.
Renee Kertz started both contests, stopping 11 of 13 shots over the weekend and picking up her first collegiate win on Sunday.
Scouting Louisville – The Cardinals, who entered last week ranked 18th in the Soccer America Top 25, are off to a 2-0 start to the season after defeating Purdue, 4-3, in double overtime last Friday. Louisville has tallied six goals in its first two matches, three of which have come from Angelika Uremovich. Charlyn Corral has assisted on four of the Cardinals' tallies.
Scouting Kentucky – The Wildcats are also unbeaten (2-0) at the start of the season and are coming off a 2-1 win over Eastern Kentucky last Friday night. UK is outshooting opponents, 30-2, through two matches. Ashley Van Landingham leads the Wildcats with two goals while Kayla King and Kayla Price have each logged 90 minutes in goal. Kentucky defeated Southeast, 2-0, at last year's Tropical Smoothie Invitational.
Shulman Breaks Out – After scoring a team-high nine goals in her award filled freshman season,
Erin Shulman has been marked a little tighter in her sophomore campaign. She broke out of a slight slump on Sunday, placing a penalty kick into the net for her first goal of the year. Shulman took a game-high five shots, equaling her combined total from the first three contests of the year. Shulman's goal snapped a streak of seven -straight matches without scoring, the longest of her career.
