Saint Louis 1, Southeast Missouri 0
Julian Austin threw a complete game shutout to lead Saint Louis to a 1-0 victory in game one.
Austin, after giving up a leadoff single to
Evan Sallis in the first, beared down to retire 14 of her next 16 hitters before allowing another hit, a leadoff double to Kaitlin Wallace in the sixth.
Southeast, however, made things interesting with two outs in the seventh.
Xia Wilson and
Simone Patterson each reached base on infield hits to give the Redhawks runners at first and second.
Shelby Stein then belted a single to right, but Billiken right fielder Erin Harcar threw out pinch-runner
Renee Terry at the plate to end the game.
Southeast had just seven baserunners, with only two moving into scoring position.
Saint Louis used a two-out single by Harcar out of the nine-hole to grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Jessica Van Nostrand scored on Harcar's hit to give the Billikens the quick edge.
That was all the run support Austin would need, who puzzled Southeast the rest of the way.
Austin improved to 6-11 on the season after allowing five hits, striking out four and walking two in seven sparkling innings.
Alora Marble (13-15) took the loss. Marble gave up eight hits, struck out two and walked three in six innings.
Offensively, Jessica Buschjost (2-for-4) and Kerri Dockins (2-for-3) combined for four of Saint Louis' eight hits.
Additionally, the Billikens left 10 runners on base, including six in scoring position.
Sallis, Wilson, Patterson, Stein and Wallace contributed one hit apiece for Southeast.
Southeast Missouri 6, Saint Louis 1
Southeast Missouri sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 6-1 win in the nightcap.
A hit batsman, two walks, an error and six hits figured into the scoring during the Redhawks decisive opening frame.
Evan Sallis led off the game with a bunt single and stole second base. Kaitlin Wallace followed with a single and went to second on the throw.
Renee Kertz then singled home both Sallis and Wallace. Kertz later scored on a two-out bases loaded walk by
Jamie Woodworth. Two infield hits, an error and a walk came after Woodworth's bases on balls, leading to three more runs, as Southeast built a comfortable 6-0 advantage.
Saint Louis avoided the shutout when it scored its only run in the bottom of the second.
Lindsay Friedman drew a one-out walk and went to second on a wild pitch. Jessica Van Nostrand knocked in Friedman on a single to center, cutting Southeast's lead to 6-1.
Taylor Cowan (2-6) allowed just two hits and one run in seven innings to get the win. Cowan struck out three and walked two, as well.
The Redhawks backed Cowan with some strong defense, especially at third base where Wallace had six assists. Southeast went error free in the doubleheader.
Sallis went 3-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored to lead Southeast. Wallace, Kertz and Cowan also added a hit at the top of the Redhawks lineup.
In addition, Kertz had two RBI, bringing her career total to 130. She needs just three more RBI to break Southeast's career record of 132 currently held by Michelle Summers (2005-08). Kertz has 43 RBI this season alone.
Hannah Huebbe (10-14) took the fall for Saint Louis. Huebbe, who lasted only two-thirds of an inning, was charged with all six of Southeast's runs.
The Redhawks and Billikens dedicated Tuesday's doubleheader to Tianna Stockley. Stockley, who signed with Southeast during the early signing period in November, lost her life in a one-car accident on Feb. 19. Her parents, Mike and Sherri, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Southeast ends its season with a home doubleheader against Belmont Wednesday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m., CT, at the Southeast Softball Complex.
