Racers Stage Late Rally, Top Redhawks 8-7

Redhawks swept in final OVC series, fall short of conference tournament

Southeast gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in an 8-7 loss to Murray State Sunday

MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State (29-16, 17-10) scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome a four-run deficit and beat Southeast Missouri (22-29, 13-16), 8-7, Sunday afternoon at Racer Field.

Murray State completed a three-game sweep of Southeast, which went winless (0-4) on the week. The Redhawks also fell short of making this year's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

Southeast led, 7-3, before the Racers stormed back during their final at-bat in the seventh.

Mo Ramsey ignited the late-game rally with a bunt single and quickly scored on an ensuing triple by Alexa Becker. Casey Castile followed with a double and went to third on an error. Becker also scored on the play. After Mandi Kellerman struck out, Sarah Anderson knocked in Castile on a single up the middle. Megan Glosser then delivered a two-out, two-RBI double to drive in both the tying and winning runs, sending Murray State to victory.

Southeast build a 5-0 lead after scoring three runs in the first and two in the fourth.

Evan Sallis walked and stole second to move into scoring position. Moments after Taylor Cowan drew a one-out walk, Lindsey Patterson drove in Sallis and Cowan on a double to left. Patterson later touched home on a single by Simone Patterson, grabbing the Redhawks a 3-0 lead in the first.

Shelby Stein smacked a two-run home run to extend Southeast's lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth. The homer was Stein's third of the season.

Kaitlin Wallace's solo home accounted for one of the Redhawks final two runs in the sixth. Renee Terry scored the other run when Stein grounded out to second.

Murray State scored all of its runs in the last four innings of the game, pushing across two in the fourth and one in the fifth prior to its big seventh.

CheyAnne Gaskey (8-2) earned the win in relief. Gaskey gave up four runs on four hits, while striking out two and walking two in 6.1 innings. She replaced starter Shelby Kosmecki with one out in the first inning.

Alora Marble (13-14) suffered the loss for Southeast. Marble allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 6.2 innings. She also struck out two and walked five.

Murray State outhit Southeast, 11-7.

Glosser, Castile and Anderson led the Racers with two hits each.

Xia Wilson went 2-for-3 to lead Southeast. Sallis, L. Patterson, S. Patterson, Stein and Wallace followed with one hit.

Murray State pulled off its late game heroics without head coach Jay Pyron who was ejected in the top of the first inning.

Southeast, which ended OVC play, will close out its regular-season with four non-conference games. The Redhawks travel to Saint Louis for a 3 p.m., CT, doubleheader Tuesday.
