CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Southeast Missouri (19-25, 10-13 OVC) softball team dropped a close game to Eastern Illinois (23-17, 13-6 OVC) Tuesday evening, 1-0.
The lone run of the game came in the first inning when Bailey O'Dell reached base on a lead-off double to right field, was bunted to third and scored on a groundout from Carly Willert to go up a run on the Redhawks.
Alora Marble (11-12) gave up only three hits to the Panthers in her 18th complete game of the season. Marble walked two and struck out one.
“
Alora Marble settled down after the first inning and gave us an excellent opportunity to win the game,” said head coach Lana Richmond. “Offensively, we failed to swing the bat. The opportunity to score with runners on base went down with called-third strikes.”
Cheyenne Gipson and
Xia Wilson were the only Redhawks to record a hit in the game.
Ashleigh Westover, Reynae Huchtinson, and O'Dell each recorded a single hit for the Panthers.
Stephanie Maday (13-9) went the distance for EIU, limiting Southeast to just two hits in the contest. Maday struck out eight Redhawk batters and walked two.
“I believe we still have a chance to win out in our last two conference series to make the conference championship,” said Richmond.
Southeast welcomes the Tennessee State Tigers this weekend for a three-game series. First pitch of the doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
