Redhawks Sweep Lady Govs, 6-2, in Series Finale

The Southeast Missouri softball team swept the Lady Govs of Austin Peay in the series finale on Sunday, 6-2.

Simone Patterson led Southeast this week going 10-for-14, batting .714 with two triples, four RBI, and 14 total bases.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri softball team completed a weekend sweep of Austin Peay (12-25, 6-15 OVC) in the series finale on Sunday, 6-2.

Southeast improves to 19-24 overall, 10-12 in OVC play. This is the Redhawks first series sweep of the season.

Entering the sixth inning tied 2-2, the Redhawk offense exploded with four runs to ensure the victory and the sweep over the Lady Govs.

Southeast was the first to get on the board when Shelby Stein drilled a two-run single up the middle to plate Simone Patterson and Renee Terry to take a 2-0 lead on the Lady Govs in the second inning.

Austin Peay did not waste much time to answer back. In the bottom of the third, Lauren de Castro singled up the middle to score Kayla Davidson and cut the Redhawk's lead to one. Later in the frame, the Lady Govs executed the double steal to advance de Castro to second and score Catie Cozart and tie up the game.

The Redhawk bats got hot in the sixth inning. They broke the tie on blast to left field from Renee Kertz; her third home run of the year. Xia Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to score Taylor Cowan from third and put Lindsey Patterson in to scoring position. S. Patterson singled to bring home L. Patterson and put Southeast up 5-2. Kaitlin Wallace capped the rally when she singled and advanced to third on an error to plate S. Patterson and allow Southeast to go up by four.

The Redhawks were able to hold on to the lead and bring home the win. With the double header sweep over Middle Tennessee on Wednesday and the series sweep over Austin Peay, Southeast went undefeated this week and is on a five-game winning streak.

Cowan led the Redhawk offense with a 2-for-4 day with a run scored. Seven other Redhawks all had a hit against Austin Peay on Sunday. S. Patterson led Southeast this week going 10-for-14 (.714) with two triples, four RBI, 14 total bases, a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .733 on-base percentage.

Davidson led Austin Peay after posting a 1-for-2 record with a walk and a run scored.

Alora Marble (11-11) picked up the win for Southeast. Marble pitched her 17th complete game of the season. She went 3-0 this week with three complete games, giving up only eight runs with 13 strikeouts. She held batters to a .265 batting avg. and recorded a 2.55 ERA.

Taylor Mills (1-5) suffered the loss for the Lady Govs. She gave up five runs on seven hits to the Redhawks in her six innings of work in the circle.

Southeast travels to Eastern Illinois on Tuesday and looks to extend its five-game winning streak and pull within a game of the .500 mark in OVC play. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m., CT.
