Richmond Earns 850th Victory in Doubleheader Sweep Over Austin Peay

Lana Richmond earned her 851st career vistory in Southeast's doubleheader sweep over Austin Peay on Saturday.

Head coach Lana Richmond, who is in her 30th season at Southeast, has 851 career vitories after her Redhawks swept Austin Peay in doubleheader on Saturday.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Head coach Lana Richmond earned her 850th and 851st career victories when the Southeast Missouri softball team swept the Lady Govs of Austin Peay (12-24, 6-14 OVC), 5-4 in eight innings in game one and 7-3 in game two on Saturday.

Southeast improves to 18-24 overall and 9-12 in OVC play with the wins.

Southeast opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning. With runners on second and third, Simone Patterson forced two runs in with a single to center field and advanced to third on a throwing error by the center fielder to put the Redhawks up 2-0.

The Redhawks tacked onto their lead in the next frame, beginning the frame with three-straight singles, the last of which was by Kertz and drove home Evan Sallis to make it 3-0.

After scoring a single run on a double from Lauren de Castro in the third, Southeast answered right away with a run on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Smith to make it 4-1 about midway through the game.

The Lady Govs added two more in the fifth to cut the Redhawk's lead to a run. Sarah Rasmussen hit a lead-off homerun followed by an RBI single from Paige Neely later in the inning.

Austin Peay tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings with three-straight two-out singles. Southeast got a quick response in the top of the eighth as Renee Kertz hit an RBI single to go up by a run. That run stood up as Alora Marble retired the side in order to secure the victory.

Southeast outhit Austin Peay 14-11. A total of nine Redhawk batters recorded at least one hit in the extra-inning decision. Sallis led the Redhawks at the plate recording a 3-for-4 day. Kertz, who leads the team with 29 RBI, drove home two runs and is now on a five-game hitting streak.

De Castro and Neely both had 3-for-4 outings. They combined for three of Austin Peay's four RBI.

Marble (10-11) threw her 16th complete game of the season. Marble struck out three batters and walked none.

Morgan Brewer (6-11) suffered the loss for the Lady Govs. She came in relief for de Castro, pitching six innings. They each struck out three Redhawk batters.

The Lady Govs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Neely lofted a sacrifice fly to score de Castro and then Brewer delivered an RBI single to put the Redhawks into an early hole.

Southeast took the lead for good in the top of the third. With two outs, Kertz evened the score at 2-2 via a two-run single. Taylor Cowan followed with another RBI single to plate Cheyenne Gipson and go up by a 3-2 margin.

The Redhawks' offense wasn't done there. Southeast added a two more runs in the sixth when Sallis drove in two runs on a single and an error with the bases loaded to increase Southeast's lead to 5-2.

APSU responded with a solo home run from Kayla Davidson in the bottom of the frame to pull within two runs, but that was the closest the Lady Govs would get the rest of the way. Southeast played long ball itself in the top of the seventh as Xia Wilson launched her third home run of the season to put the Redhawks up 7-3 and cap the scoring in game two.

Southeast was able to hold on to their lead to sweep the doubleheader. This is Southeast's fourth doubleheader sweep of the season.

Sallis and S. Patterson each went 2-for-3 in game two. Southeast out-hit Austin Peay 13-6 for the second game in a row today. Seven Redhawks recorded hits in game two. Sallis ended the day 6-for-8 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Shea Cothren (5-9) pitched her 17th complete game this season in the victory over Austin Peay. Cothren allowed only three runs on six hits.

Brewer (6-11) suffered her second loss of the day after giving up four runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Southeast looks to sweep Austin Peay tomorrow at 1 p.m., CT.
