CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (12-17, 5-5) rallied for a pair of come-from-behind victories in a 9-8, 4-1, doubleheader sweep of SIU Edwardsville (11-19, 3-7) Sunday afternoon at the Southeast Softball Complex.
Southeast scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one before using a three-run sixth inning to bury the Cougars in the nightcap.
The Redhawks improved to 4-1 at home this season.
Southeast Missouri 9, SIUE 8
Cheyenne Gipson scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Southeast Missouri a thrilling 9-8 win in game one.
Gipson reached safely on an error when SIUE relief pitcher Rebecca Gray bobbled the ball. Gipson, after moving into scoring position with her team-high 15
th stolen base of the season, advanced to third on a
Taylor Cowan groundball out. She then scored easily when Gray's wild pitch skipped by catcher Samantha Stanicek.
The Redhawks erased a five-run deficit to pull off their comeback.
SIUE scored four runs in the top of the first and added another in the second before Southeast started to chip away at the Cougars lead.
The Redhawks quickly pulled to within two runs in the bottom of the second.
Kaitlin Wallace laid down a bunt single and
Brittany Smith reached on an error.
Evan Sallis singled to load the bases. Gipson and
Lindsey Patterson each walked before Cowan delivered an infield single to narrow SIUE's lead to 5-3.
Southeast tied the game at 5-5 in the third.
Xia Wilson smashed her first career home run over the center field wall.
Shelby Stein followed with a double to left center. After back-to-back strikeouts,
Evan Sallis knocked in Stein on an infield hit.
Both teams scored three runs in the fourth inning, sending the game to an 8-8 deadlock.
L. Patterson belted a leadoff double to left center and scored on an ensuing double by Cowan. Wilson also doubled and Cowan scored.

Renee Terry.
Alora Marble (6-8) picked up the win. Marble gave up eight runs on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking one in her complete game performance.
Rebecca Gray (0-4) suffered the loss. Gray gave up two hits and a run, walked three and struck out two in 3.1 relief innings.
Southeast outhit SIUE, 12-10, with Cowan and Sallis leading the way with three hits apiece. Cowan had two RBI and Wilson added two hits and two RBI, as well.
Southeast Missouri 4, SIUE 1
Southeast Missouri scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to finish off its doubleheader sweep with a 4-1 victory.
The score was tied 1-1 through five-and-a-half innings before the Redhawks put together their late game heroics.
Sallis ripped a leadoff triple down the right field line and scored on an error. Gipson, L. Patterson and Cowan each singled after that, with Gipson scoring on Cowan's hit.
Renee Kertz doubled to right center, plating pinch-runner Terry to give Southeast a 4-1 advantage.
SIUE threatened during its final at-bat, bringing the tying run to the plate.
Shea Cothren, however, pitched out of the jam, as the Cougars stranded two baserunners.
Cothren (3-5) gave up just one run on six hits in her complete game victory. She also recorded two strikeouts.
Amanda Lambrecht (8-7) took the loss. Lambrecht scattered seven hits and allowed four runs in 5.1 innings. In addition, she struck out four and was removed from the game in the sixth inning when a line drive struck her in the left shoulder.
Southeast registered seven hits, all of which came from the first six hitters in its lineup.
L. Patterson had a team-high two hits, while Sallis, Gipson, Cowan, Kertz and Wilson contributed one each.
Southeast remains home to host UT Martin on Mar. 29. First pitch is set for 5 p.m., CT.
