MARTIN, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (10-17, 3-5) dropped a pair of one run games to Ohio Valley Conference leader UT Martin (18-10, 8-0) Wednesday. The Redhawks lost by scores of 5-4 (nine innings) and 2-1.
UT Martin won game one with a walk-off RBI-single by Leah Taylor, before using a two-run homer by Lauren Smith in the nightcap to complete its doubleheader sweep.
“
Alora Marble and
Shea Cothren pitched two excellent games, but we came up short," said Southeast head coach Lana Richmond. "I feel we lost game one in the fifth inning when we gave up three runs on two errors. We are right there with our conference opponents. Unfortunately, we have lost those close games."
UT Martin 5, Southeast Missouri 4 (9 innings)
Two errors in the fifth inning came back to haunt Southeast Missouri in the end during game one.
Southeast held a 4-1 lead through four-and-a-half innings before the Skyhawks tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Taylor delivered a single and scored when Smith reached on an error. Jenny Baine followed with a base hit and advanced to second on another Redhawk error. Smith scored on the play. Bain later scored the tying run on a Kenzi Tate single.
The game remained deadlocked at 4-4 before the Skyhawks broke through in the ninth.
Becca Williams delivered a leadoff double to left center. Taylor then stepped and drove home Williams on her game-winning single, giving UT Martin the 5-4 victory.
Taylor wasted no time getting the Skyhawks on the board with lead-off homerun to center field to put the Skyhawks up a run in the first.
Southeast rallied for four runs in the top of the third inning to build a three-run cushion.
Brittany Smith walked and later touched home on an error.
Taylor Cowan's three-run home run, which sailed over the left field wall, gave the Redhawks a 4-1 advantage. The homer was Cowan's second of the season.
Offensively,
Renee Kertz led Southeast with two hits. Seven other Redhawks followed with one apiece. Cowan chipped in a game-high three RBI.
Williams and Taylor each had three hits and scored for UT Martin. Kayla Wade had multiple-hits, as well.
Chelsea Jones (12-3) picked up the win. Jones went the distance, giving up four runs on nine hits. She also struck out nine and walked six.
Alora Marble (5-8) took the loss for the Redhawks. She, too, pitched a complete game, allowing four runs (two unearned). Marble struck out four and issued a walk, as well.
UT Martin 2, Southeast Missouri 1
Southeast saw another lead disappear late in the game when Smith hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to send UT Martin to its eighth conference win.
Southeast took a 1-0 lead when Kaitlin Wallace scored on a single by
Cheyenne Gipson in the third inning.
That score would hold up until the Skyhawks pulled ahead in the sixth.
Wade rallied UT Martin with a leadoff single and stole second to get into scoring position. Moments later, Smith homered, and just like that, the Skyhawks took a 2-1 edge.
That was all UT Martin would need as Southeast went down in order during its final at-bat in the seventh.
Cowan and Gipson led Southeast with two hits apiece in the nightcap.
Southeast outhit the Skyhawks, 7-5.
Casey Vincent (4-2) allowed just one run on seven hits in her complete game victory. Vincent struck out five and did not give up a walk.
Shea Cothren (2-5) was credited with the loss. Cothren scattered five hits and gave up two runs, while striking out two.
Southeast returns home to host SIU Edwardsville this weekend. The Redhawks and Cougars open a three-game series with a 1 p.m., CT, doubleheader Saturday.
