RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky (8-13, 2-1) scored three unearned runs on a two-out error in the bottom of the fourth inning to secure a 4-2 win over Southeast Missouri (10-15, 3-3) Sunday afternoon at Gertrude Hood Field.
EKU won the series, 2-1, as all three games were decided by two or less runs.
The Colonels held a one-run advantage, before capitalizing on a pair of Southeast errors in the fourth. EKU had runners at first and second when Larkyn Wood fouled out. Pinch-hitter Melissa Costa then hit a fly ball to center, but
Cheyenne Gipson dropped the ball. Lauren Mitchell, Christina Ciolek and Shannon McQueen all scored on the play, giving EKU a 4-0 lead.
Southeast cut EKU's lead in half, adding one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Shelby Stein hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth, while
Xia Wilson knocked in
Lindsey Patterson on a two-out single in the sixth.
The Redhawks had a runner on in the seventh, but came away empty after Shaylon Robb got
Alene Bethel to groundout for the final out of the game.
Robb was credited with her first save of the season.
Leanna Pittsenbarger (5-6) picked up the win after allowing just one run on three hits. Pittsenbarger, who worked 4.1 innings, also walked two and faced 18 hitters.
Alora Marble (5-7) suffered the loss for Southeast. Marble went the distance, giving up four runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Both teams combined for only nine hits.
Evan Sallis,
Taylor Cowan, Wilson and Stein each had one apiece to lead the Redhawks.
Katie Tackett went 2-for-3 to lead the Colonels.
Southeast concludes its nine-game road stretch with a doubleheader at UT Martin on Mar. 21. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., CT.
