RICHMOND, Ky. – Southeast Missouri (10-14, 3-2) split a doubleheader with Eastern Kentucky (7-13, 1-1) Saturday afternoon in Ohio Valley Conference action at Gertrude Hood Field. The Redhawks dropped game one, 3-2, before rallying to win the nightcap, 7-5.
Both games of the twin bill were decided in eight innings.
Southeast trailed game two, 5-1, after six innings, but tied things up with four runs in the top of the seventh.
Taylor Cowan belted a leadoff single down the left field line and went to second when
Alene Bethel reached on an error.
Shelby Stein moved the runners when she grounded out to second. Kaitlin Wallace followed with a single to left and Cowan scored.
The Redhawks then added three runs with two outs.
Evan Sallis knocked in Bethel on a single up the middle and
Cheyenne Gipson brought home Wallace via an infield hit.
Renee Kertz's base hit to left scored Gipson to tie the game at 5-5.
Southeast put together another late rally in the eighth.
Stein ignited the Redhawks decisive surge with a two-out walk. Wallace then stepped in a blasted her first home run of the season over the left field wall to polish off the 7-5 come-from-behind win.
EKU had the tying run at the plate in its at-bat in the eighth, but Cowan ended the Colonels threat by recording three-straight outs after giving up a leadoff hit.
Southeast outhit the Colonels, 12-10. Gipson went 3-for-4 with a RBI, while Cowan, Wallace and
Brittany Smith added two hits each.
Cowan (1-4) picked up her first win of the season in relief. She gave up two hits in two scoreless innings.
Katie Tackett went 2-for-4 with a run scored, three RBI and the game-winning hit to lead the Colonels to a 3-2 victory in game one.
Tackett broke a 2-2 deadlock when she knocked in Diane Gallagher on a single to center in the bottom of the eighth inning.
EKU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Southeast answered with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Smith knocked in both of the Redhawks runs on a two-run homer to right center.
Alora Marble (5-6) took the loss. Marble gave up three runs on 10 hits, while striking out four and walking none in seven innings.
Shaylon Robb (3-5) earned the win. Robb struck out one and gave up two hits in three scoreless innings out of the Colonels bullpen.
EKU outhit Southeast, 10-6, and neither team committed an error.
Southeast and EKU wrap up their three-game series at Noon, CT, Sunday.
