EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Southeast Missouri (9-13) split a doubleheader with Evansville (7-11) Thursday at Cooper Stadium. The Redhawks took game one, 6-1, before dropping the nightcap, 5-4.
The Redhawks have won five of their last seven games.
Southeast Missouri 6, Evansville 1
Evan Sallis went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Southeast Missouri to a 6-1 win in game one.
Southeast took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back.
Sallis delivered the game's first hit with a double and advanced to third on an ensuing bunt single by
Cheyenne Gipson. After Gipson stole second to get into scoring position,
Renee Kertz flied out to center. Sallis scored on the play thanks to an error by UE center fielder Tamara Robey.
Taylor Cowan capped the rally with a two-out RBI-single.
The Redhawks added to their lead with another run in the fifth.
Gipson sparked a two-out rally with a bunt-single and stole second. Kertz walked to give Southeast runners at first and second.
Lindsey Patterson followed with a single and Gipson scored to give the Redhawks a 3-0 cushion.
The game was then delayed 45 minutes when lightning was spotted in the area.
Once play resumed, UE got on the board when Katie Sears knocked in Allison Aguilera on a two-out single to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Victoria Dellorto singled after that, but Gipson threw out Sears at the plate to end the inning.
Southeast buried the Purple Aces for good with a three-run seventh.
Sallis led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice-bunt by Gipson. Kertz reached on an error and Sallis scored. L. Patterson and Cowan delivered back-to-back singles with pinch-runner
Leah Becker scoring on Cowan's hit. Patterson later touched home on a sacrifice fly by
Shelby Stein to put the finishing touches on the 6-1 win.
Alora Marble slammed the door on UE when she sat down the Purple Aces in order during the bottom half of the seventh.
Marble went the distance, allowing just one run on 11 hits. She also struck out four and walked one, improving to 5-5 on the year.
Southeast pounded out 13 hits with Sallis paving the way. Gipson, Patterson and Cowan contributed two hits each.
Kendall Kautz (1-3) suffered the loss. Kautz scattered eight hits and allowed three runs in 4.2 innings. She struck out on and walked two, as well.
Evansville 5, Southeast Missouri 4
Evansville scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Southeast Missouri in the nightcap.
The Purple Aces trailed, 4-1, after six innings before rallying in the final half-inning.UE plated four runs on two hits. A Southeast error, which led to two runs, also factored into the scoring.
Southeast fell behind, 1-0, in the first, but took its first lead in the third. Kertz belted a two-out, two-RBI double to give the Redhawks one-run advantage.
The Redhawks tacked on another run in each of the fourth and seventh innings before UE's decisive surge.
Renee Terry scored with the help of an error in the fourth, while Kaitlin Wallace touched home on a Sallis fielder's choice in the seventh.
Cowan (0-4) was credited with the loss. Cowan gave up five runs on eight hits, walked six and struck out one in 6.1 innings.
Sarah Patterson (4-5) earned the win. Patterson allowed two hits and a run in three innings. She recorded three strikeouts, as well.
Offensively, Gipson and Wallace had two hits apiece to lead the Redhawks.
Southeast returns to Ohio Valley Conference action at Eastern Kentucky this weekend. The Redhawks and Colonels open a three-game series with a doubleheader at Noon, CT, Saturday.
