MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Southeast Missouri (4-4) lost two games at the Blues City Classic Friday. The Redhawks fell to Miami (Ohio), 6-2, and Western Illinois, 12-4.
Miami (Ohio) 6, Southeast Missouri 2
Jordan McElroy went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI to lead Miami (Ohio) (5-1) to a 6-2 win over Southeast.
The game was scoreless for three innings until Miami (Ohio) broke through with two runs in the top of the fourth.
McElroy, after delivering a leadoff single and coming around to score in the fourth, stepped in and smacked a three-run homer to push the RedHawks lead to 5-0 with two outs in the fifth.
Southeast cut into Miami's lead when Renee Kertz and Taylor Cowan each belted two-out RBI-hits to narrow the gap to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
Miami (Ohio) then added one more run in the sixth.
Southeast stranded nine baserunners and came up empty with the bases loaded in the sixth. The Redhawks left five of their runners on base in the last two innings alone.
Shea Cothren (1-2) took the loss after giving up two runs on eight hits in four innings. Stefanie Barnes and Alora Marble pitched the rest of the way. Barnes allowed two hits and three runs in one inning, while Marble scattered two hits and gave up one run in the final two innings.
In addition, neither of Southeast's pitchers had a strikeout.
Paige Myers (3-0) earned the win for Miami (Ohio). Myers gave up six hits and two runs, while striking out three and walking one in 4.2 innings.
Offensively, the RedHawks registered 12 hits, with Kirstie Fehrenbach (3-for-4) and McElroy accounting for five.
Evan Sallis went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Southeast. Kertz, Cowan, Lindsey Patterson and Xia Wilson added one hit apiece, as well.
Additionally, both teams went without committing an error.
Western Illinois 12, Southeast Missouri 4
Southeast committed a season-high four errors in its 12-4 loss to Western Illinois in the nightcap.
The Redhawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Sallis singled to center, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on an error and scored when Kertz grounded out to second. Xia Wilson singled home Cheyenne Gipson to cap the early rally.
After that, Southeast would not lead again.
WIU responded by scoring eight unanswered runs, putting up three in the first and second innings and two in the third.
The Redhawks managed to cut the Leathernecks lead to 8-4 when Brittany Smith knocked in two runs on a single in the top of the fourth, but that was as close as Southeast would get.
Southeast also gave up a season-high 12 runs.
Hailey Bickford (1-4) earned her first win of the season, giving up six hits and four runs in four innings.
Meanwhile, Marble (2-2) suffered the loss. She allowed 11 runs on 11 hits in just three innings. She also struck out three and walked one.
WIU outhit Southeast, 12-6.
Sammy Marshall paved the way for the Leathernecks, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
Six of Southeast's nine starters had a hit.
The Redhawks resume play at the Blue City Classic Saturday. Southeast will face Northern Iowa at 6 p.m. and Missouri State at 8 p.m., CT.
