MONROE, La. - Sophomore Alora Marble allowed just one run in seven innings to lead Southeast Missouri (4-2) to a 3-1 win over Northwestern State (1-3) Sunday in the final day of the Mardi Gras Classic. The Redhawks won the tournament with a 4-1 record.
Marble held Northwestern State scoreless for six innings and gave up her only run in the third, leading Southeast to its third-straight win.
A pair of Northwestern State errors led to one unearned run for Southeast in the top of the first.
Renee Kertz reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop Brittany Virgoe. Southeast struck out in its next two at-bats, but a wild throw by catcher Cassandra Barefield allowed Kertz to score, giving the Redhawks a quick 1-0 cushion.
Southeast added to its lead in the third when Cheyenne Gipson drew a leadoff walk, stole two bases and touched home on a one-out double by Taylor Cowan.
Northwestern State made it a one-run game on Virgoe's two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the third. The Redhawks then tacked on one final tally in the sixth when Brittany Smith scored Kaitlin Wallace on a two-out single through the left side, capping the 3-1 win.
Kertz (2) and Cowan (2) combined for four of Southeast's seven hits on the day.
Marble improved to 2-1 on the season. She also struck out one, walked four and faced 29 hitters.
Kelee Grimes (1-1) suffered the loss for Northwestern State. Grimes recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed just two hits in five innings. She also walked two.
Southeast outscored its last three opponents by a combined 32-8.
"We had complete games from Cothren and Marble. They pitched well and their defense was good in key situations," said Southeast head coach Lana Richmond. "We were also able to get timely hits with runners in scoring position."
Marble, Shea Cothren and Lindsey Patterson each earned All-Tournament honors, while Kertz was named the tourney's Most Valuable Player.
The Redhawks return to action at the Memphis Blue City Classic on Feb. 24-26.
