Balanced Effort Lifts Redhawks Past Skyhawks, 3-1

Southeast clinched the OVC West Division Title with the win

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team picked up an important 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19) road victory at UT Martin Tuesday evening. Four different Redhawks recorded double digit kills.
 
“Anytime we have a balanced effort like this we are going pick up wins,” said head coach Julie Folliard.
 
The Redhawks recorded 11 blocks on the night, their 13th double-digit blocking effort of the season.
 
“We are working so hard in the middle from in to pin,” said Folliard.
 
The Redhawks improve to 19-12 overall and 11-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference as the Skyhawks fall to 10-19 overall and 6-9 in the OVC.
 
The Skyhawks took the opening frame 26-24 over Southeast. The Redhawks enjoyed an early 8-4 lead, but the two teams would finish the frame battling for position to take the match until UT Martin closed the set on a 4-1 run.
 
The Redhawks battled back taking the second set 25-19. The Redhawks closed out the frame on a 10-4 run that included a 5-0 run to propel them to the win. Southeast dominated the frame at the net with four total blocks.
 
Southeast used 10 kills and three blocking errors on their way to a 25-18 win in the third set to take a 2-1 match advantage. The Redhawks forced seven attacking errors by the Skyhawks as Southeast outhit UTM .267 to .167 in the frame.
 
Southeast jumped out to a 10-5 lead early in the fourth set thanks to an impressive .455 hitting percentage. Southeast also forced three UTM errors and added two service aces.
 
Southeast would build a 15-9 lead in the set, but a 4-0 run by the Skyhawks pulled them within two points at 15-13. But Southeast closed the frame on a 10-6 run to take the set 25-19.
 
Junior Emily Coon led the Redhawks with 13 kills as she added five blocks.
 
Colleen Yarber added 12 kills with Kelsey Keeve and Brittney Kalinoski rounding out the double-digit attack with 11 kills apiece.
 
Berkley Idel added a team-high 26 digs. Julie Shives finished the match with 39 assists and 10 digs.
 
UTM was paced by Allie Whimpey with 11 kills.
 
The Redhawks return home to take on Tennessee Tech on Saturday in their final home match of the season. Action starts at 2:00 p.m. as Southeast will honor their three seniors playing their final home contest.
