Volleyball Makes Short Trip To UT Martin Tuesday Night

The Redhawks can clinch the OVC West Division with a win and Austin Peay loss

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ­– The Southeast Missouri volleyball team heads to UT Martin to take on the Skyhawks in their Ohio Valley Conference road finale on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m., CT. The Redhawks can clinch the OVC West Division with a win and an Austin Peay loss to Murray State.

News and Notes:

Series History
The Redhawks are 58-15 all-time against the Skyhawks. Southeast defeated UT Martin 3-1 in their home opener on September 25. The Redhawks won 32 straight contests between the two schools from 1988 to 2004.

Career Weekend
Southeast junior middle blocker Emily Coon tied a Southeast Missouri record for blocks in a match on Friday night at Murray State as she recorded 12 total blocks. She also tied a school record for blocking assists in a match with 11. Coon joins Erin Willrich and Angie Aschoff as Redhawks who have recorded 12 blocks in a match. Willrich recorded 12 blocks twice in her career, once against Morehead State on Novemeber 18, 1995 and once against Vaparasio on November 29, 1996. Aschoff recorded 12 blocks on December 2, 1999 against Loyola Marymount. Junior Emily Coon followed her record tying outing with a career night offensively as she recorded a career-high 21 kills on Saturday afternoon in a 3-2 loss to Austin Peay. Her previous career-high was 18. She finished the weekend with 37 kills after recording 16 kills on Friday.

Double-Double Trouble
Julie Shives has recorded a team-high 19 double-doubles on the season. She has recorded a double-double in eight of her last 10 matches. She recorded a career-high 53 assists against Belmont and Friday against Murray State added a season-high 20 digs against Eastern Illinois. Colleen Yarber has recorded 17 double-doubles on the season for the Redhawks. She has recorded a double-double in eight of her last 11 matches. During that stretch she has recorded 20 or more kills twice and 20 digs once.

Preseason All-OVC
Junior middle blocker Emily Coon and junior setter Julie Shives were named Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference by OVC coaches and sports information directors. Coon was named to Preseason All-OVC in 2011 and earned postseason All--OVC honors as well.

Preseason Polls
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team was picked third in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll. The  Redhawks received 192 points and two first place votes in this season's poll. Morehead State the defending OVC Champions were picked to win the league with 242 points and 22 first place votes. Newcomer Belmont was picked second with 198 points after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2011.
