Coon Ties School Record In 3-1 Win Over Murray State

Emily Coon recorded 12 blocks on Friday night at Murray State as she tied a school record

Junior Emily Coon led the Redhawks with 16 kills and tied a school record with 12 blocks.

MURRAY, Ky. – Southeast Missouri junior Emily Coon tied a school record with 12 total blocks on Friday night in a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22) win over Murray State in Murray, Ky.
 
The Redhawks improve to 18-11 overall and 10-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference as the Racers drop to 4-19 overall and 2-11 in the conference.

“Murray State battled with us tonight and we responded very well,” said head coach Julie Folliard.

Coon, a native of Imperial, Mo. also added 16 kills as she hit .351 on the night. She finished the match with 22.5 points.

“Emily did a great job tonight, they had no way of stopping her and she found ways to make plays,” said Folliard.

Coon joins Erin Willrich and Angie Aschoff as Redhawks who have recorded 12 blocks in a match.
 
Willrich recorded 12 blocks twice in her career, once against Morehead State on Novemeber 18, 1995 and once against Vaparasio on November 29, 1996. Aschoff recorded 12 blocks on December 2, 1999 against Loyola Marymount.
 
The Redhawks took the opening frame 25-22 despite being outhit by the Racers .324 to .281.
 
Southeast was paced by Colleen Yarber and Coon in the opening frame as they added four kills apiece. Yarber hit .500 in the frame as she also added a team-high four digs.
 
Murray State took the second frame 25-23. The Redhawks hit over .300 in the stanza, but the Racers added 16 kills to the Redhawks' 13 in the set.
 
The Redhawks took the third frame 25-20. Southeast held the Racers to a .094 hitting percentage in the frame with eight errors as they took a 2-1 match lead.
 
Southeast took the fourth stanza 25-22. Southeast used a 9-1 run in the set to take a 20-16 lead as they never looked back taking the match 3-1.
 
Coon was the catalyst in the comeback bid in the fourth frame as she recorded three of her 12 blocks in the stretch including five blocks in the entire frame.
 
Julie Shives tied her career-high with 53 assists. She also added 12 digs earning her 18th double-double of the season.

“Julie did a great job of distributing the ball and she helped us hit a high percentage tonight,” said Folliard.
 
Yarber had a great night as well recording 16 kills. She also added 11 digs. Berkley Idel led Southeast with 24 digs.
 
Emily Schmahl led all players with 20 kills for the Racers. Wendi Zickfield added 16 kills.
 
The Redhawks have a chance to win the Ohio Valley Conference West Division with a win over Austin Peay tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
