MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team's rally fell short in a 3-2 (17-25, 25-23, 13-25, 25-20, 15-10) loss to Belmont in the Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament in Morehead, Ky. on Friday evening.
 
“I'm proud of the way we battled and the way we came from behind showed that we had a lot of heart “ said head coach Julie Folliard.
 
The Redhawks finished the season 21-13 overall earning their best record since 2000.  Seniors Brittney Kalinoski (Overland Park, Kan.), Samantha Lowman (Lincoln, Ill.) and Karlee Lursen (Apple Valley, Minn.) played their final game in a Redhawks uniform.
 
“We have established ourselves as a title contender in the OVC and the future is very bright for Southeast volleyball,” said Folliard
 
Belmont hit .292 in the match with 74 kills as the Redhawks finished the afternoon with 56 kills hitting at a respectable .197 clip.
 
The Bruins were impressive in the first frame hitting .500 with 22 kills on their way to a 25-17 win. Belmont used a 10-4 run halfway through the set to give take advantage in the stanza.
 
The Redhawks built a five-point lead at 12-7 to open up the second set. Belmont later battled back to tie the set at 16-16 off of their third block of the contest.
 
Each team made 4-0 runs late in the set as they were once again deadlocked at 20-20. The Redhawks then finished the set on a 5-3 run taking the second frame 25-23, Colleen Yarber led the charge in the stanza with five kills.
 
Belmont once again was aggressive in the third frame racing out to a 12-3 lead. The Bruins were on fire hitting an impressive .429 during the opening stretch.
 
The Bruins kept the pressure on the Redhawks for the rest of the set taking the frame 25-13, hitting another impressive hitting percentage of .444.
 
The Redhawks jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the fourth set hitting .667 during the stretch.  A 4-0 run by the Bruins later tied the set at 11-11.
 
The Redhawks closed out the frame on a 8-3 run to send the match into the fifth set as Kelsey Keeve lifted the Redhawks with five kills in the frame.
 
Southeast dropped the final set 10-5. The Redhawks could not recover after falling behind 5-0 to open the set.
 
The Redhawks were led by Colleen Yarber with 18 kills on the night.
 
Libero Berkley Idel finished the night with a career-high 29 digs for Southeast.
 
“Berkley played very scrappy for us tonight and her reaction time was great,” said Folliard.
 
Julie Shives dished out 47 assists as she passed Jami Baumstar (2003-2006) for fifth all-time in career assists at Southeast Missouri.
 
 The Bruins were led by a quartet of players who recorded double-digit kills. Allison McCoy led all players with 20 kills.
