MOREHEAD, Ky. – The second seeded Southeast Missouri volleyball team advanced to the OVC Tournament semifinals with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21) win over seventh seed Jacksonville State Thursday afternoon at Wetherby Gymnasium in Morehead, Ky.
“It is was what you expect from a conference tournament it was a battle until the last point,” said head coach Julie Folliard.
Junior
Julie Shives recorded a career-high and season-high for a Southeast player with 33 digs on the afternoon. She also paced the offense with 39 assists.
“Julie did a great job adjusting to their game plan and playing great defensively,” said Folliard.
Kelsey Keeve and
Brittney Kalinoski added 13 kills apiece to lead the offensive charge. Keeve tied a career-high and has recorded 13 kills in back-to-back contests.
“Kelsey was great in the clutch for us today and was very efficient,” said Folliard.
The Redhawks found themselves down 10-5 early in the opening set, but used a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to one at 11-10. Southeast would eventually take their first lead of the set at 16-15 on a Kalinoski kill.
“We just remained composed early in the sets and know that physically we can win the matches,” said Folliard.
Southeast jumped out to a 22-18 lead late in the opening set. JSU answered with a 3-0 run to come within one at 22-21. Southeast held on to the lead late taking the set 25-22.
The Redhawks fell behind 5-2 early in the second frame, but turned the tables on the Gamecocks with a run of 5-2 themselves to tie the set at 7-7.
Southeast and Jacksonville State would battle the rest of the set with five tied scores and five lead changes, but the Redhawks pulled away late taking the second set 25-20.
Jacksonville State once again raced out to an early lead this time at 8-2 over the Redhawks in the third set. Southeast battled back to come within four at 13-9 and made a late run, but the early deficit was too much as JSU took the set 25-19.
After falling behind 9-4 to open fourth set the Redhawks used a 10-4 run to take their first lead of the set at 14-13.
The two teams then engaged in a back-and-forth affair with neither team holding an advantage in the frame until the Redhawks used a 4-1 run to take a 21-18 lead over JSU.
Southeast held on to the lead and took the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
The Redhawks had four players record double-digit digs.
Berkley Idel added 25 digs.
Samantha Lowman added a season-high 18 digs.
Colleen Yarber added 16 digs and 11 kills recording her 19
th double-double of the season.
Emily Rutherford led all players with 18 kills on the afternoon. Nicole Marget added nine blocks in the match.
The Redhawks face Belmont tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m., CT. in the semifinals.
