News and Notes:
Last Week – Southeast lost two one-goal decisions at SIU Edwardsville (1-0) and Eastern Illinois (3-2 in double overtime) over the weekend, falling to 0-6 away from Houck Stadium (0-5 road, 0-1 neutral site). SIUE's Chelsea Smith scored the lone goal of Friday night's match in Edwardsville, converting a rebound in the 28th minute of play. Southeast outshot SIUE 9-4 in the second half and 14-9 overall, but could not find a tying goal. On Sunday, Eastern Illinois jumped on top 2-0 in the first half on a penalty kick goal with 2:01 gone by and on a header in the 28th minute. The Redhawks fought back resiliently in the second half, outshooting the Panthers 13-4 in the final regulation frame and tying it up on goals by
Taylor Byrd and
Storm French. EIU stifled the Southeast rally in double overtime, scoring the winner with under three minutes left in the final period to send the Redhawks to their third-straight one-goal loss.
About Eastern Kentucky – The Colonels are locked in a three-way tie atop the Ohio Valley Conference standings with a 3-0-1 league record (7-4-2 overall), though they have played fewer matches than both teams they are tied with. EKU sports a conference-leading 0.70 goals against average in OVC play. Nikki Donnelly leads the Colonels with six goals and 14 points (fifth in the OVC) while Lauren Fant and Kaylynn Brown have each scored two goals apiece. Erika Wolfer is EKU's primary keeper and she sports a 1.21 goals against average and has two shutouts to her credit. Samm Melton started twice last weekend, allowing only one goal as the Colonels went 2-0.
About Morehead State – After coming within 19 minutes of an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011, the Eagles have found wins hard to come by this fall. MSU is 1-2-1 in OVC play (1-9-2 overall) and its 10 goals are tied for the fewest in the conference. Kimberly Golden leads the Eagle attack with two goals and five points. In goal, Elizabeth Lloyd has started nine of 12 matches and has a 1.47 goals against average and a .731 save percentage.
Abbott Plays a Lot – Senior defender
Hayley Abbott has started all 69 matches Southeast has played since she arrived on campus, tying
Nikki Edwards' school-record of 69. Abbott is also the Redhawks record holder in career minutes, playing 6,135 minutes on the pitch.
Strong Rally – While Southeast ultimately came up short in its comeback attempt against Eastern Illinois, it did pull off a come back that hasn't been done in awhile. The Redhawks erased a 2-0 second-half deficit to force overtime in Sunday's setback. The last time Southeast managed to climb out of a two-goal deficit was in the OVC Tournament Semifinals against Samford on Nov. 3, 2006, a 3-2 double overtime win for Southeast.
