Yarber and Shives lead Redhawks past Lady Govs, 3-1

The Redhawks remained undefeated in OVC play

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team remained perfect in Ohio Valley Conference play with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 26-28, 25-19) win over Austin Peay Friday evening at Houck Field House. The Redhawks improve to 13-7 overall and 5-0 in the OVC as the Lady Govs fall to 8-12 and 2-3 in the conference.

“We made them play our game tonight,” said head coach Julie Folliard. “I was very proud of the way we played.”

Southeast Missouri continued their Dig for Life Campaign Friday as they honored survivors of Breast Cancer in between the second and third sets.

Southeast was led by Colleen Yarber as she recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs. She hit .289 on the night.

“Colleen played very well for us tonight, she played very aggressive and hit well from the back row,” said Folliard.

Setter Julie Shives also added a double-double with a season-high 50 assists and 11 digs helping the Redhawks hit .269 as a team on the evening.

“Julie did a great job distributed the ball well, she got great passes all night and spread the ball around to all of our hitters,” said Folliard.

The Redhawks got off to a fast start in the first set taking the opening frame 25-16. Southeast hit an impressive .467 in the set with 15 kills and only one error.

Southeast used a 9-3 run to jump out to a 13-7 lead to take control of the opening frame. The Redhawks forced five Lady Govs errors in the stretch.

Southeast took the second frame thanks to the presence of Taylor Masterson in the middle as the Redhawks took the frame 25-20. Masterson was marvelous in the run with three kills and four blocks.

Austin Peay used 12-7 run to tie the stanza at 17-17, but Southeast closed out the second frame on a 8-3 run.

APSU took the third frame 28-26, The Redhawks hit a match-low .196 with seven errors.

The Redhawks took the final set 25-19 as they held the Lady Govs to a .036 hitting percentage with seven kills and six errors. The Redhawks used six service aces in the final frame including the match point as they took the match 3-1.

Senior Brittney Kalinoski added 13 kills and a team-high 12 digs. Emily Coon added 12 kills hitting a sizzling .427.
Masterson added five blocks in the middle for the Southeast.

Austin Peay's Nikki Doyle added a match-high 23 kills. Jada Stotts also added 18 kills for the APSU offense.
