CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri soccer team hits the road for its second week of Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Redhawks (2-7-3, 1-1-1 OVC) travel to SIU Edwardsville (4-5-1, 1-2-0) OVC and Eastern Illinois (3-9-0, 1-2-0 OVC) on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Friday's contest against the Cougars kicks off at 7 p.m. Sunday's tilt against the Panthers starts at 1 p.m.
Quick Kicks
•Southeast defeated both SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois by a combined score of 5-0 last season.
•The Cougars have scored one goal in five all-time meetings against the Redhawks.
•Southeast has not defeated Eastern Illinois in Charleston since Oct. 5, 2001. The Redhawks are 1-6 all-time at EIU.
•Eastern Illinois is the only OVC school that Southeast has a losing record against in the all-time series.
•Southeast has scored seven goals in Ohio Valley Conference play, all of which have come in the first half.
News and Notes:
Last Week – Southeast played three-straight home matches to open OVC play last week. The Redhawks took on defending OVC Tournament champion UT Martin last Tuesday, tying the Skyhawks 1-1.
Courtney Luehmann scored less than two minutes into the contest but a late UTM goal sent the game to halftime tied at one apiece, a score that never changed.
Renee Kertz made 12 saves in the draw. On Friday, the Redhawks stormed ahead of Murray State with six-first half goals en route to a 6-0 victory. The Southeast defense combined for three goals and four assists, with the game-winner provided by senior defender
Hayley Abbott.
Torey Byrd also tallied two goals in the win. Goals were hard to come by on Sunday as Southeast dropped a 1-0 decision to Austin peay. Kertz made eight saves and Southeast had numerous point blank chances in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net for a tying goal.
About SIU Edwardsville – The Cougars are off to a 1-2 start to OVC play in their first tournament-eligible season in the league. SIUE dropped road contests against Tennessee Tech (1-0) and Jacksonville State (3-2) over the weekend. Despite the losses, the Cougars did control possession during both matches, outshooting their opponents by a combined count of 59-16. Michelle Auer has scored three of the Cougars' eight goals and leads the team with eight points. Jennifer Pelley has played the majority of the minutes in goal and has a 0.80 goals against average, four shutouts and an .854 save percentage.
About Eastern Illinois – The Panthers are also sitting at 1-2 in OVC play and have a 3-9 overall record entering play this weekend. Kristin Germann leads EIU with four of the team's 10 goals. Jessica Taldone has played all 12 matches in goal and has a 1.84 goals against average and a .778 save percentage.
