NASHVILLE –
In a crucial match for both teams, the Southeast Missouri and Belmont soccer teams played to a 0-0 tie on Friday night.

The Redhawks (4-9-4, 3-3-2 Ohio Valley) extend their unbeaten streak to three matches after their school-record sixth-overtime contest this season. Coupled with the rest of Friday's OVC results, Southeast and Belmont (7-6-3, 3-2-2 OVC) are tied for fifth in the OVC standings, one point ahead of Eastern Illinois.

“Belmont is probably the most physical team we've played in the league,” Southeast head coach Heather Nelson said. “The game was fast paced and I thought our team did a really good job tonight. Unfortunately, we lost Courtney (Luehmann) to an injury, but the rest of the midfielders, particularly Torey Byrd really stepped up.”

Through 90 minutes of play, the Redhawks and Bruins (7-6-3, 3-2-2 OVC) each fired 14 shots on the other goal (7-7 in each half). Both keepers stopped six shots in regulation.

Southeast created the most dangerous scoring chance in the overtime frame after winning a foot race to a loose ball over Belmont keeper Nicole Berner. Unfortunately, the Redhawks were unable to get a good look with Berner out of the goal as the Bruins' defense backed her up and a shot sailed over the goal to keep the contest scoreless.

“We created some problems for their defense,” Nelson said. “Belmont recovered well to keep us from scoring there. Overall, I thought we played some of our best soccer as the game wore on. Renee was solid all around, she made a pretty good save going to her left in the first half to keep us scoreless.”

There was statistically very little to separate the teams over the 110 minutes. Southeast held a 16-15 advantage in shots while Belmont took a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. The teams combined for 27 fouls in a hard fought contest. Belmont was also flagged with two yellow cards.

With her seven saves tonight, Kertz lowers her goals against average to 0.83 (0.62 in OVC play).

The Redhawks resume their regular season ending road trip on Oct. 26 when they head to Tennessee Tech.
