Last Week – Southeast recorded its second consecutive shutout in a 3-0 road victory at Evansville on Friday.
Torey Byrd chipped in her first goal of the year when she headed home a
Jacey Boyko cross in the 30th minute to make it a 1-0 contest at halftime. Southeast scored two more times in the second half with
Lauren Bozesky netting her first goal of the season in the 49th minute and
Erin Shulman chipping in with her team-best fourth goal in the 75th minute of play.
Ashton Aubuchon turned aside four shots in 78:56 before giving way to
Abby Jordan for the final 11:04. Southeast outshot Evansville, 13-10, in the contest, including a 9-5 edge in the second half.
Scouting Butler – Butler is off to a 4-2-0 start to its season. The Bulldogs notched a pair of dramatic victories at home last week. On Friday, Jackie Hafele headed home a corner kick to snap a 1-1 tie with 45 seconds remaining to defeat Eastern Michigan. Two days later, Butler erased a 2-0 first half deficit by scoring three goals in a 15-minute span to down Eastern Illinois 3-2. Thirteen different players have recorded at least one point for the Bulldogs this season, with Katie Griswold topping all players with six points (three goals).
Scouting Kentucky – Kentucky is an unblemished 5-0-0 coming into the Tropical Smoothie Invitational this weekend. The Wildcats' last four victories have come by 2-1 margins. UK went 2-0 at the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. last weekend. On Friday, Kentucky's Stuart Pope came through in the clutch with an overtime goal to lead UK to a 2-1 overtime win over Central Michigan. On Sunday, Arin Gilliland scored with 6:54 remaining to give the Wildcats another 2-1 win over Baylor. UK has outshot its opposition, 82-47, this season and its led offensively by Kelsey Hunyadi's 11 points (four goals, three assists). Kayla Price has logged every minute in goal and sports a 0.79 goals against average and a shutout this season.
News and Notes:
All-Time Series – Friday will be Southeast's first meeting against Butler in its history. The Redhawks and Wildcats have met only once, a 2-1 victory for Southeast in Lexington on Sept. 19, 2002.
Holding Them Off – Southeast has been stingy defensively over the last two and a half games. The Redhawks have not yielded a goal since there was 44:09 remaining in their contest at Iowa on Aug. 21. Since then, Southeast has held its opponents scoreless over the past 224:09.
Consistent Attack – Southeast has gotten strong efforts up front in the early going, having scored at least once in all four matches this season. The magic number for Southeast appears to be three goals, a figure that it has reached three times this season (all victories). The only time the Redhawks failed to score three goals was their lone setback of the year, a 2-1 loss at Iowa.
Spreading the Wealth – The Redhawks branched out their scoring in their 3-0 victory at Evansville last Friday as three players each found the back of the net once.
Torey Byrd and
Lauren Bozesky each found the back of the net for the first time in 2011 while
Erin Shulman netted her team-high fourth goal of the year in the victory.
Fire Away – The Redhawks erupted offensively in ways beyond the goal total in their home opening win over Arkansas State on Aug. 28. Southeast fired 18 shots in a 4-0 win, the first time all season the Redhawks reached double digits in shots. The shot figure doubled Southeast's previous best of nine from its Aug. 21 contest at Iowa. The Redhawks' 18-4 shot advantage also marked the first time they have outshot an opponent in 2011.
Giving Nothing – The Aug. 28 win over Arkansas State was anchored by a stellar defensive effort in which Southeast allowed only four shots over the entire 90 minute period. It was the first time this season the Redhawks held an opponent to single digit shot attempts.
Fresh Legs – A nice side benefit during the past two lopsided wins was the fact that Southeast was able to utilize its bench and allow key starters some rest. A total of 20 players stepped onto the pitch Sunday and all but one logged at least 12 minutes of playing time against Arkansas State while 18 players checked in during Friday's win at Evansville.
New Blood – Some of the newest members of the Redhawks are making the biggest impact on the scoresheet. Freshman
Erin Shulman (four goals) and senior transfer
Jessie Crabtree (three goals) pace the Southeast attack with a combined seven goals and 14 points in the young season. Each has one multi-goal outing with Crabtree netting a pair of goals in the season-opener at Illinois State and Shulman finding the back of the net twice against Arkansas State on Aug 28.
