CAPE GIRARDEAU –
The Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team dominated play from start to finish, but it took a late goal to lift the Redhawks to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Illinois at Houck Field on Friday.

Erin Shulman scored with 8:29 remaining for the contest's only tally and the Redhawks (7-2-1, 3-0-0 Ohio Valley) outshot the Panthers (3-7-2, 2-1-0 OVC) 19-8 in their first home match since Aug. 28.

“I was very pleased with our possession and attacking around the goal tonight,” head coach Heather Nelson said. “Tonight went quite a bit like I expected. It was hard fought the entire way and their goalkeeper was very good. We showed a good deal of confidence and enthusiasm to go to the goal.”

The Redhawks flexed their muscles in the first half, outshooting the Panthers by a 12-4 margin while owning a decided 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Nine of Southeast's 12 shots were on goal, but Eastern Illinois keeper Jessica Taldone turned away every chance to keep the contest scoreless at halftime. The EIU keeper finished the night with 14 saves.

Play tightened up on both sides in the second half, with the teams combining for 11 shots (7-4 Southeast). The teams also combined for 12 fouls as positioning was difficult to obtain for each team.

The match remained scoreless until the 82nd minute when Stephanie Palmer hustled to keep an errant cross from going out of bounds for a goal kick. After corralling the ball off the goal line, Palmer sent a perfect cross into the middle to Shulman, who quickly redirected it into the net for her ninth goal of the year. The tally was also her fourth game-winning tally.

“That was a great effort by Stephanie to keep the ball in play,” Nelson said. “She played a very nice ball to give us a chance to score. Erin got beat up with the physical play tonight, but she got back in the game and came through for us.”

Southeast's defense kept nearly all of EIU's shot attempts to the outside as Ashton Aubuchon only had to make one save to record her fourth solo shutout of the season.

The Redhawks return to Houck Field on Sunday afternoon when they host SIU Edwardsville at 1:00 p.m.
