CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. –
The Southeast Missouri State soccer team's offense got back on track and once again Erin Shulman was the catalyst on Friday night.

Shulman scored two second half goals to lift the Redhawks (5-2-1, 1-0-0 Ohio Valley) to a 3-1 road victory at Austin Peay (6-4, 0-1 OVC) in their conference opener. The Bloomington, Ill., native now has a team-high seven goals this season.

“The entire team played picked up their game in the second half,” Southeast head coach Heather Nelson said. “Erin was very dangerous offensively. In addition to the two goals, she hit a couple of crossbars and the keeper made a great save on another. She was outstanding tonight.”

It took barely 10 minutes for the Redhawks to score their first goal in three matches as Lauren Bozesky lifted a cross to the back door, setting up Ali Bauer for her first goal of the season at the 10:06 mark.

Southeast took the first three shots of the match in that opening 10-minute span. However, Austin Peay turned on the pressure at the other end by firing the next eight shots. The Governors finally solved Ashton Aubuchon in the 36th minute when Morgan Zigelsky converted off a corner kick to send the contest into halftime tied at 1-1. Austin Peay ended up holding a 9-4 advantage in shots in the opening frame.

With the match tied up, Shulman put the offense on her back by scoring twice in a 2:17 span. Her first tally put the Redhawks back on top in the 51st minute when her blast from 25 yards out found the back of the net. She allowed Southeast to seize control in the 53rd minute when she fired a loose ball past APSU keeper Haylee Shoaff to make it 3-1.

The Governors threatened in the second half and appeared to pull within a goal off a free kick in the 78th minute, but a player was called offside before a shot found its way into the net. Southeast turned it up defensively the rest of the way, yielding only one more shot over the final 11 minutes and change.

“There were about 20 minutes in the second half where they outplayed us,” Nelson said. “We defended well for the most part. The goal they scored came on a header off a corner. Austin Peay a good team that is very well organized, this is a great result for us to get.”

Shulman's two-goal outburst is her second multi-goal outing of the season. She led all players with six shots and has now scored the game-winning goal in three of Southeast's five wins.

Austin Peay actually outshot Southeast, 18-11, for the evening while holding a slight edge in corner kicks (4-3).

Ashton Aubuchon got the call in goal once again and stopped six of the shots she faced.

The Redhawks look to complete a perfect opening OVC weekend on Sunday when they travel to Murray State. Opening kickoff is at 1 p.m. CT.
