ST. LOUIS – The Southeast Missouri State soccer team dominated possession from start to finish, but the Redhawks were unable to put one in the net in a 0-0 tie at Saint Louis on Friday night.
The Redhawks (4-2-1) posted their fourth shutout of the year and outshot the Billikens (2-4-1), 18-7, on the evening.
Southeast put together a strong first half of play, outshooting SLU 7-3 in the opening stanza. The Redhawks had their first good opportunity in the 15th minute when
Jessie Crabtree set up for a shot from 10 yards out on the right side, but was stopped by Billiken keeper Katie Stock.
The Redhawks nearly got on the board in the 25th minute after a Billikens' foul created a
Vanessa Hart free kick from just outside of the 18-yard box. Her attempt cleared the wall of defenders, but Walsh was equal to the task and deflected the opportunity just wide of the goal.
Saint Louis' best opportunity came with less than five minutes remaining in the first half when Julia Merlo came down the right wing side for a close range shot that
Ashton Aubuchon turned away, keeping the match scoreless entering the break.
The Redhawks controlled play for most of a physical second half that saw both teams combine for 18 fouls and three yellow cards. Southeast outshot Saint Louis 9-1 and put together several quality chances in the final regulation period.
Southeast's first great opportunity in the second half came when
Erin Shulman and
Rachel Compton each got point blank opportunities off a corner kick, but Walsh was again there to make the save. With under five minutes left in regulation, Hart was found just outside the 18-yard box on a free kick cross by
Shona Goodwin, but her shot was corralled by Walsh to keep the contest scoreless through 90 minutes.
Saint Louis attempted all three shots in the final overtime and nearly ended the contest with three minutes left when Jenny Hummert fired a free kick that went just wide of the left post.
“I am very pleased with our possession in the game,” head coach
Heather Nelson said. “We were smart in picking good positions on the field. Saint Louis' goalkeeper played really well tonight.
“We created some good opportunities, but we need to be a bit more composed in the final third of the field. That will be one of our focuses going into conference play. Overall, I'm very happy with how the team is playing.”
In addition to the advantage in shots, Southeast held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Ashton Aubuchon got her seventh consecutive start and turned aside all three shots she faced in 110 minutes for her second solo shutout of the season.
The Redhawks return to the pitch on Sept. 23 when they open up Ohio Valley Conference play at Austin Peay.
