CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –
Following a strong effort at the Tropical Smoothie Invitational last weekend, the Southeast Missouri State (4-2) soccer team makes a quick trip to Saint Louis for an in-state battle with the Billikens on Friday night (7 p.m. CT).

Last Week – Southeast split a pair of tight contests at the Tropical Smoothie Invitational in Lexington, Ky., over the weekend. Freshman Erin Shulman's goal in the 49th minute was all the offense the Redhawks needed to top Butler, 1-0, on Friday. Despite being outshot by the Bulldogs, 22-5, the Southeast defense allowed only two shots on goal for the match, both of which were turned aside by Ashton Aubuchon. The sophomore keeper recorded her first solo shutout of the year while the Redhawks recorded their third-straight shutout win. The winning streak came to an end on Sunday, however, as host Kentucky scored a pair of second half goals off corner kicks to send Southeast to a 2-0 setback. It marked the first time that the Redhawks have been shut out in 2011. The Wildcats' first goal in the 65th minute snapped a shutout streak of 378:59. Aubuchon, Vanessa Hart and Hayley Abbott were each placed on the Tropical Smoothie Invitational's All-Tournament for their strong performances over the weekend.

Scouting Saint Louis – The Billikens improved to 2-4 on the season after a 3-1 home victory over UMKC on Sunday. That victory snapped a four-match losing streak, a streak that saw SLU get shut out three times while being outscored 14-2. Abby Stock leads Saint Louis with three goals and seven points. Katie Walsh has played every second in goal for the Billikens and sports a 2.50 goals against average and a .651 save percentage. The Billikens are a perfect 2-0 at home this season and have outscored their opponents, 7-1, in Hermann Stadium.

News and Notes:

All-Time Series – Southeast and Saint Louis have met on the pitch on three occassions with the BIllikens taking all three matches by a collective score of 6-2.

Last Meeting – These teams last clashed on Sept. 14, 2007 in Saint Louis, where the BIllikens posted a 3-1 win. The contest was the Redhawks' second and final loss in the 2007 season as they ended the year with a 13-match unbeaten streak.

Holding Them Off – Probably the greatest strength of the Redhawks this season has been their stellar play on the back end. Southeast posted three consecutive shutouts during its recent three-match winning streak and went a span of 378:59 without allowing a goal before Sunday's setback at Kentucky. Two of the mainstays on the back line anchoring the defense are senior Nikki Edwards and junior Hayley Abbott, who have logged 525 and 520 minutes, respectively, out of the 540 minutes the team has played this season.

Magic Number is 2 –
One of the trends emerging for Southeast this season is its success when scoring two goals or more this season. The Redhawks are a perfect 3-0 when they find the back of the net at least twice, but are 1-2 when scoring less than two goals.

Winning the Close Ones –
Southeast managed to grind out a 1-0 victory over Butler in the first match of the Tropical Smoothie Invitational last Friday. In addition to their fewest goals scored in a victory this season, the Redhawks improved to 2-1 in one-goal contests in 2011.

Last Line of Defense –
On the rare occassion that a quality scoring opportunity has presented itself for the opposition, sophomore goalkeeper Ashton Aubuchon has been equal to the task. In her past five matches, Aubuchon has stopped 21 of 25 shots (.840 save percentage) and has a 0.84 goals against average with one solo shutout in 430:32 between the posts. She also earned the latest Ohio Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week award after allowing only two goals over the weekend in the Tropical Smoothie Invitational.

New Blood – Some of the newest members of the Redhawks are making the biggest impact on the scoresheet.  Freshman Erin Shulman (five goals) and senior transfer Jessie Crabtree (three goals) pace the Southeast attack with a combined eight goals and 16 points in the young season. Each has one multi-goal outing with Crabtree netting a pair of goals in the season-opener at Illinois State and Shulman finding the back of the net twice against Arkansas State on Aug 28.

Giving Nothing – The Aug. 28 win over Arkansas State was anchored by a stellar defensive effort in which Southeast allowed only four shots over the entire 90 minute period. It was the first time this season the Redhawks held an opponent to single digit shot attempts.
