Last Week – Newcomers
Erin Shulman (two goals) and
Jessie Crabtree (one goal) combined to score three of the Redhawks' four goals in a dominant 4-0 victory over Arkansas State at Houck Field on Sunday. Both of Shulman's tallies came in the first half as she staked Southeast to a 2-0 halftime lead with goals in the 13th and 20th minute. Crabtree made a it 3-0 contest in the 53rd minute and
Stephanie Palmer capped the scoring in the 87th minute. Southeast held ASU to only four shots in posting its first shutout of the season.
Ashton Aubuchon got the start and made two saves in 81:36 of playing time and
Jessica Grindstaff turned away one shot in the final 8:24 to keep the Red Wolves off the scoresheet.
Scouting Evansville – The Purple Aces enter this week with a 1-2-1 mark in the early going this season. Evansville snapped a three-match winless streak on Sunday when it blanked Valparaiso, 1-0. Sophomore Stephanie Thompson netted the game-winner in the 89th minute to give UE its first win of 2011. The Purple Aces have been outshot, 69-25, and opponents have attempted 20 more corner kicks (31-11). Tasha Prentice leads Evansville with three points (one goal, one assist) and three other players have scored one goal this season. Chaviel Harrison has played all 380 minutes in goal, stopping 26 of 35 shots (.743 save percentage) and sporting a 2.13 goals against average and one shutout for the year. Friday's match will be Evansville's second of the week as it takes on Xavier on Wednesday.
News and Notes:
All-Time Series – Southeast and Evansville have met on the pitch six times and the season series is dead even at 2-2-2. The series is even tied up in goals, with each scoring four apiece in the meetings. The Purple Aces have a four-match unbeaten streak in the all-time series (2-0-2) and have not lost to the Redhawks since Aug. 29, 2004, a 1-0 Southeast victory in Cape Girardeau. Neither team has scored more than one goal in any of the six previous meetings.
Last Meeting – The Redhawks and Purple Aces last met on Aug. 23, 2009 in Cape Girardeau, where Evansville pulled off a 1-0 victory at Houck Stadium.
Can I Help You? – Perhaps one overlooked aspect of Sunday's win over Arkansas State was Southeast's crisp passing. The Redhawks finished with five assists on the four goals.
Vanessa Hart and
Rachel Compton were the two main catalysts in the effort, with each dishing out two helpers
Fire Away – The Redhawks erupted offensively in ways beyond the goal total on Sunday. Southeast fired 18 shots against Arkansas State, the first time all season the Redhawks reached double digits in shots. The shot figure doubled Southeast's previous best of nine from its Aug. 21 contest at Iowa. The Redhawks' 18-4 shot advantage also marked the first time they have outshot an opponent in 2011.
Giving Nothing – Sunday's win over Arkansas State was anchored by a stellar defensive effort in which Southeast allowed only four shots over the entire 90 minute period. It was the first time this season the Redhawks held an opponent to single digit shot attempts.
Fresh Legs – A nice side benefit from Sunday's lopsided win was the fact that Southeast was able to utilize its entire bench and allow key starters some early rest. A total of 20 players stepped onto the pitch Sunday and all but one logged at least 12 minutes of playing time.
New Blood – Some of the newest members of the Redhawks are making the biggest impact on the scoresheet. Senior transfer
Jessie Crabtree and freshman
Erin Shulman are each tied for the team lead with three goals and six points in the young season. Each has one multi-goal outing with Crabtree netting a pair of goals in the season-opener at Illinois State and Shulman finding the back of the net twice against Arkansas State last Sunday.
Another Milestone – Head coach
Heather Nelson picked up her 150th career victory in Southeast's season-opening win at Illinois State on Aug. 19. Nelson owns a career record of 151-117-30 (.557 win percentage) in 17 seasons of coaching. Her record at Southeast is a stellar 120-73-25 (.608 win percentage).
