About Western Michigan – The Broncos are off to a 1-6 start with their lone win a 69-63 final over Milwaukee at University Arena last Saturday. WMU suffered a 70-65 setback at previously winless Chicago State on Tuesday, committing a season-high 32 turnovers in the process. Western's leading scorer and rebounder, Miame Giden (11.8 points per game, 7.8 rebounds per game) has missed the past two games and is officially out indefinitely with a lower body injury. Senior Maria Iaquaniello is the Broncos' next leading scorer, averaging 9.6 points per game on 47.5 percent shooting. WMU is averaging 60.6 points per game and allowing 73.1 points per contest. The Broncos have allowed 70 points or more in six of its seven games thus far.
Last Meeting (Southeast 60, Western Michigan 56; Dec. 7, 2010) – The Redhawks erased an 11-point deficit with 10 minutes left on the strength of a 20-2 run, grabbing their only lead of the game as they defeated the Broncos at the Show Me Center. Bianca Beck and Brittany Harriel each scored 12 points while Karley Evans and Katie Norman chipped in 11 apiece. The Redhawks shot 68.2 percent in the second half after hitting only 6-of-22 first half shots (27.3 percent).
Tough Road Sledding – Southeast is winding down its non-conference schedule still in search of a road victory. Both of the Redhawks' road wins last year came in OVC play. Southeast's last non-conference road victory came at Central Arkansas on Nov. 17, 2007 at Central Arkansas (91-60). Since then, the Redhawks have dropped 20 straight non-conference road contests.
Better Starts – The Redhawks opened the season with a rough habit of starting slowly, seeing large deficits in the opening minutes in four of their first five games and trailing at halftime in all five contests. Since starting off in a 30-5 hole in the first 11:10 and trailing 50-21 at the half at UAB, the Redhawks have led at halftime in each of their last four contests. Prior to this stretch, Southeast trailed 10-1 in the first 3:49 at NC State, 8-0 in the first 2:01 at Illinois-Chicago, 10-0 in the first 4:39 of its home opener against Ole Miss and 12-2 in the first 3:57 at UAB.
Board Work – A point of emphasis for the Redhawks this season has been improving the team's rebounding. That area was still a struggle in the first three games as opponents outboarded Southeast by 13 per game. In the last six games, the Redhawks have only been outrebounded once and are +27 on the glass overall in that span (+4.5 per game).
Cleaning the Glass – Junior center Courtney Shiffer had a night to remember against Lindenwood on Saturday. The Freeport, Ill., native posted her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. The rebounding total was more than double her previous career best of eight and is the most rebounds a Redhawk has grabbed in one game since Lachelle Lyles pulled in 21 rebounds against Samford on March 2, 2007.
Evans' Breakthrough – Senior guard Karley Evans erupted offensively last week, contributing two double-digit scoring efforts, both in Southeast victories. Against Arkansas State, Evans scored a career-high 17 points while shooting 7-for-12 from the floor (3-for-6 from three). Last Saturday, the Rock Port, Mo., native led Southeast with 15 points in and dished out three assists in a win over Lindenwood. She also tied a career-high with four three-point makes in the win. In her last three games, Evans is averaging 11 points while shooting 38.9 percent from beyond the arc.
