Redhawks Edge Past Colonels, 3-1

Southeast won the final three sets to notch a 3-1 win at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
RICHMOND, Ky. – Colleen Yarber and Brittany Kalinoski combined for 29 kills to lead the Southeast Missouri State volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.

Yarber notched 15 kills and made 22 digs while Kalinoski recorded 14 kills to improve the Redhawks to 12-16 overall and 10-7 in Ohio Valley Conference play.

The Colonels took the first set 26-24.  Southeast hit .270 in the frame, but EKU managed 15 kills in the set to take the opening frame.

Eastern Kentucky managed to take a 13-9 lead in the frame the largest lead of the set. The Redhawks would battle back and tie the set at 17-17.

EKU took a 23-21 lead late, but Southeast came back and tied the set at 24-24. EKU would capitalize on Redhawks errors late as they took the opening set.

The second set saw neither team lead by more than two in the set. Southeast took the frame as the Redhawks baffled the EKU offense holding them to a .089 hitting percentage and forcing nine errors as Southeast took the set 25-23.

Southeast jumped ahead, 9-2, in the third set and withstood an EKU rally to take the set 25-22 and grab its first lead of the afternoon. The Redhawks hit .190 in the set and held the Colonels to a .154 clip in that frame.

The final set was tied at 13 apiece midway through, but Southeast caught fire with a 12-6 run to close out the victory. The Redhawks took advantage of three Colonel service errors while Yarber and Karlee Lursen added a couple kills down the stretch. Southeast hit .163 and EKU countered with a .119 hitting percentage in the set.

Also standing out for the Redhawks were Berkley Idel and Julie Shives. Idel led Southeast with 23 digs while Shives had 46 set assists, 14 digs, four kills and three blocks. Emily Coon led Southeast with five blocks while chipping in eight kills and hitting a team-best .438.

Southeast hit .193 for the match and recorded 57 kills. The Redhawks held the Colonels to a .140 clip in the four sets.

The Redhawks close the season out with a three-match home stand next week. The first match on the slate is on Nov. 8 against SIU Edwardsville. First set at Houck Fieldhouse is at 6:30 p.m.
