Quick Hits
About UAB – The Blazers are off to a 1-2 start and are being plagued by offensive slumps similar to what the Redhawks have endured. UAB is shooting only 31.8 percent from the floor, though opponents are hitting 40 percent of their shots against the Blazers. Three UAB players are averaging double figures, led by LaShaunda Pratt (15.0 points per game) and followed by Amber Jones (14.7) and Karisma Chapman (10.3). UAB has not scored more than 59 points in any of its games thus far, though two of its losses are by six points or less.
About Samford – The Bulldogs are 2-1 out of the gate, averaging 59.3 points per game while yielding 60.7 per contest. Five Samford players are averaging at least eight points per contest, though only Shelby Campbell (11.0 points per game) is in double figures. The Bulldogs are making 42.8 percent of their shots from the field and are shooting a similar 42.4 percent mark from beyond the arc. Samford spent five seasons in the Ohio Valley Conference (2003-04 season to the 2007-08 campaign), winning at least 12 league games and posting two 20-win seasons in its final three seasons in the league. Saturday's contest against the Redhawks'will be both teams' second game in as many days. Samford opens the tournament against Western Kentucky on Friday.
Costly Droughts – Southeast has gone cold offensively at inopportune times in all four games this season, turning tight contests and, in some cases, leads into setbacks each time. The latest scoring slump happened against Ole Miss on Monday night, where a 26-24 deficit in the second half became a 12-point hole as the Rebels outscored the Redhawks 10-0 in a span of 5:55 as Southeast lost by eight points. Against both NC State and Saint Louis, Southeast went scoreless for over eight minutes, droughts that cost it a shot at a win. After scoring on their opening possession of the second half at NC State, the Redhawks did not score for the next 8:58, which turned a 12-point deficit 46-18 margin. After taking a 20-16 lead with 2:40 remaining in the first half at Saint Louis, Southeast went 9:21 without a point, during which SLU scored 24 unanswered points to send the Redhawks to a nine-point setback. While there was no prolonged scoreless streak against Illinois-Chicago, the Redhawks were outscored 30-12 over the final 11 minutes after holding a 42-39 lead.
Rockin' Roberts – Junior
Bailie Roberts has been a consistent source of offense for the Redhawks early on this season. Roberts has led or tied for the team lead in scoring three times while pouring in double figure scorings in three of four games. She has also been efficient from the floor lately since struggling to a 2-for-12 shooting mark in the season opener against NC State. In her last three games, Roberts is shooting 45 percent (19-for-40) from the floor and is leading the Redhawks with 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while dishing out 2.0 assists.
Slow Starts – Another problem for Southeast this season has been its slow play out of the gate. Southeast has yet to score first in any of their first four games, forcing it to play catch up right off the bat. In three of the first four games (detailed below), Southeast has faced a big deficit in the opening minutes.
• at NC State – trailed 10-1 first 3:49
• at Illinois-Chicago – trailed 8-0 first 2:01
• vs. Ole Miss – trailed 10-0 first 4:39
