Volleyball set for OVC Championship Tournament

Redhawks return to OVC Championship Tournament for first time since 2008

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -The Redhawks head to Morehead, Ky. for the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Championship Volleyball Tournament. It is the first time since 2008 that the Redhawks have been apart of the championship. Southeast will open up play against Eastern Kentucky at 6 p.m., CT. Thursday a game that can be seen on OVCSports.tv.
 
Redhawks in the OVC Tournament
The Redhawks are 25-13 all-time in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, which is the best record by any team in the OVC. The Redhawks have won five OVC championships, trailing only Eastern Kentucky who has won nine OVC titles. The Redhawks have a 11-6 record against teams in the 2011 OVC Championship Tournament. The Redhawks and EKU have split their two meetings in the OVC Tournament as Southeast won 3-2 in 1994 and the Redhawks lost 3-0 in 2005.
 
Double-Double Trouble
Sophomore setter Julie Shives is a double-double machine for the Redhawks this season. Shives has double-doubles in 23 of 31 games so far this season and has double-doubles in 15 of 20 OVC contests. Shives surpassed 2,00 assists for her career on Friday night against Austin Peay. Shives now has 2,062 assists in her career as a Redhawk.
 
Emily Coon named All-OVC
The Ohio Valley Conference released the 2011 All- Conference Volleyball Team this morning and sophomore middle blocker Emily Coon was named to the list. The Imperial, Mo. native is the Redhawks' first All-OVC pick since Karleigh Delong in 2009. Coon is the 20th player in school history to be named to the All-OVC squad. In 124 sets this season, Coon has 135 total blocks, which leads the OVC as she is averaging 1.09 blocks per frame. During OVC contest Coon is averaging 1.29 blocks per frame, which also lead the OVC. Coon is also an offensive threat for the Redhawks recording 260 kills on the season ranking second on the Redhawks. She hit .290 with only 85 errors in 603 attacks. During OVC contest Coon hit .306 to rank third in the Ohio Valley Conference. She averaged 2.31 kills per set during OVC matches as she added 192 kills to the Redhawks' offense during the conference schedule. Coon recorded an Ohio Valley Conference season-high in attack percentage against Eastern Illinois on Oct. 4 as the middle blocker recorded a .619 hitting percentage with 14 kills in 21 attempts as she recorded only one error.
