Volleyball Drops Five Set Tilt with Tennessee State

The Redhawks will play in the OVC Championship Volleyball Tournament next Weekend

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team dropped a five set tilt (19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 15-11). with Tennessee State (18-10, 13-7) Saturday evening at Houck Fieldhouse. Seniors Paige Dossey and Holly Reynolds played their final match at Houck Fieldhouse as the seniors were honored before the contest.
 
The Redhawks dropped the first set as Southeast only hit at a .086 clip as the Tigers took the opening frame 25-19. TSU used a four-point run late in the frame on their way to the win in the opening set.
 
Southeast responded in the second frame hitting .314 in the set. The Redhawks wasted little time jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the set. The Redhawks would expand their lead to 12-7 later in the frame on a kill by Emily Coon.
 
TSU would battle back and cut the Southeast advantage to a little a 15-13, but the Redhawks pulled away late on a three-point run to take the second frame 25-20.
 
The Redhawks came out of the break aggressive in the third set as Southeast held the Tigers to a .061 hitting percentage as Southeast forced 10 errors for the Tigers. 
 
Southeast built a 5-1 lead in the opening of the frame, but Tennessee State would tie the set at 10-10. The two teams would battle until the Redhawks closed out the set on a 5-1 run to take the frame 25-18.
 
TSU turned the tables on Southeast in the fourth set holding the Redhawks to a .067 hitting percentage forcing nine errors as the Tigers tied the match at 2-2 taking the fourth frame 25-21.
 
Tennessee State jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead in the fifth set as the Tigers opened the set hitting at a .500 clip. The Redhawks would cut the lead to as little as two at 9-7 and 11-9, but that's as close as Southeast would get as they fell 15-11 in the fifth frame and fell 3-2 in the match.
 
The Redhawks outhit the Tigers .175 to .166 in the match. TSU had 12 blocks on the evening with the Redhawks recording nine.
 
Southeast was led by Emily Coon who had 15 kills on the night to go along with a game-high eight total blocks. Junior Karlee Lursen added a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs.
 
Setter Julie Shives had an outstanding night with 42 assists to go along with nine digs and nine kills as she almost recorded a rare triple-double. Libero Berkley Idel recoded 27 digs for Southeast.
 
The Redhawks will return to action Thursday evening at the OVC Volleyball Championship Tournament in Morehead, Ky. as the Redhawks will take on Eastern Kentucky at 6 p.m., CT. in a game that can be seen on OVCSports.TV.
