RICHMOND, Ky. – Lauren Bozesky netted her third goal in as many matches to help the Southeast Missouri State soccer team defeat Eastern Kentucky, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
The victory extends the Redhawks (9-3-1, 5-1 Ohio Valley) lead in the OVC and puts them back in the win column after dropping a tight decision at Morehead State on Friday. Southeast handed EKU (5-7-2, 3-1-1 OVC) it's first league loss of the year.
The teams played a scoreless first half, though the statistics ended in favor of the Colonels in the first 45 minutes of play. After Southeast held a 3-2 advantage in shot attempts early on, EKU fired the final four shots of the first half to outshot Southeast 6-3 at the break.
The contest remained scoreless until the 56th minute, when Bozesky tallied her fifth goal of the year by converting a
Shona Goodwin cross from the middle of the 18-yard box to make it a 1-0 contest. That goal is Bozesky's third game-winning goal in her last five matches. She also tied a match high with four shot attempts.
Eastern Kentucky held a slight, 16-14, advantage in shots, though Southeast placed 10 of its attempts on goal versus eight shots on goal for EKU. The Redhawks also served in five corner kicks while the Colonels attempted three.
“Overall, today was a very intensely played match,” Southeast head coach
Heather Nelson said. “EKU is a talented team. There were parts today where we dominated, but it was generally hard fought up and down the field all game. I think we came out a little stronger in the beginning of the second half.
“When we created our goal, they put a lot of pressure on us. It was a good team effort and a great job getting three points on the road.”
Ashton Aubuchon tied a career-high with eight saves to record her sixth solo shutout of the season. The Redhawks as a team have posted eight shutouts overall.
“Ashton was very solid today,” Nelson said. “EKU has a number of players who are dangerous from a distance. She had a great game in goal.”
Southeast returns to the pitch on Friday when it travels to UT Martin. Opening kickoff is at 3:00 p.m. CT.
