Volleyball Drops Five Set Thriller at Tennessee State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team (8-12, 6-3 OVC) dropped a five set thriller Saturday afternoon at Tennessee State (10-4, 6-3 OVC) falling to the Tigers 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 15-11 ). The win marks the third straight for TSU over the Redhawks.

“We just couldn't capitalize on their mistakes and that really hurt us in the match, we had some opening, we just need to finish,” said head coach Julie Folliard.
 
The Tigers jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the first set. The Redhawks would cut the lead and find themselves tied with TSU at 8-8.
 
Southeast would take their first lead of the set at 12-11. That lead was short lived as the Tigers fought back and built a 16-13 lead as Southeast called a timeout.
 
Tennessee State jumped out to a 21-14 lead as the Tigers continued to capitalize on errors by the Redhawks.  The Redhawks made a late surge in the set cutting the Tigers lead to 24-22, but Shaquita Williams ended the set with a kill and gave TSU a 25-22 win.
 
The Redhawks opened the second frame in style as Southeast jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The early run was paced by junior Karlee Lursen. Southeast's defensive play continued to shine as the Redhawks dominated the net building a 13-7 lead.
 
TSU cut the Redhawks lead to 18-16 as the Redhawks offense and defense could not find an effective flow during the stretch. The Redhawks later regrouped and sophomore Emily Coon finished the set with a block and a kill as Southeast took the second frame 25-19.
 
The Redhawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set. Southeast continued to put pressure on the Tigers in the set as Lursen once again paced the offense as Southeast would build a 15-7 advantage.
 
The Tigers used a set of defensive miscues by the Redhawks to trim the Southeast lead to 17-16. Southeast would make a run and take a 22-17 advantage as Lursen continued her dominance in the set.
 
Once again the Tigers would not go away as TSU cut the Redhawks lead to 23-22. The Redhawks would take the set using a TSU error and a kill by junior Brittney Kalinoski to take the frame 25-23.
 
The Tigers would jump out to 10-4 lead in the fourth set. Shaquita Williams highlighted the early run with a pair of service aces. Coon posted back-to-back blocks to pull the Redhawks within four at 12-8.
 
The Redhawks used a balanced attack to come within one at 18-17. The Tigers would then surge ahead once again, but Southeast's comeback bid late ran short as Tennessee State took the fourth set 25-21.
 
TSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fifth set. The Redhawks would cut the lead to 5-4, but Tennessee State scored back-to-back-points forcing a timeout by the Redhawks.
 
Southeast cut the lead to 9-8, but TSU used a sideout and built a 12-9 lead late in the frame. The Redhawks could not recover as they fell 15-11 in the fifth frame. Kalinoski added 10 kills for the Redhawks hitting .292 on the afternoon.  

Coon added nine blocks to lead the Redhawks, she also added nine kills. Setter Julie Shives dished out 34 assists and 14 digs. Junior Samantha Lowman also added 14 digs.
 
The Redhawks return home Friday at 6:30 p.m., CT. to take on Eastern Kentucky in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown at Houck Fieldhouse. The Redhawks will continue their Dig for Life Campaign next weekend.
