Volleyball Gets Defensive in 3-2 Win Over Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team recorded a  season-high 17 blocks in a 3-2 (16-25, 33-31, 23-25, 25-16, 15-9) win over Austin Peay Friday evening. The Redhawks were led by Julie Shives ,who dished out 49 assists on the night and added a career-high 23 digs.
 
“We had a great defensive night after the first set, we were very scrappy and learned their tendencies. We were in the right spots and read the right reads and that led to blocks, “ said head coach Julie Folliard.
 
The Redhawks jumped out a 5-3 lead in the opening set, as junior Brittney Kalinoski paced the offense with a pair of kills in the early surge by Southeast.
 
The Lady Govs battled back and used a seven-point run to take an 11-7. The Redhawks offense struggled to find rhythm during the stretch as the Lady Govs frustrated the Redhawks defensively.
 
Southeast continued to struggle in the set only hitting .057 in the frame as Austin Peay took the opening set 25-16.
 
The Redhawk's errors continued to plaque them early in the second frame as the Redhawks struggled to find their offensive groove once again. But Southeast battled back and took a 9-8 advantage.
 
The Lady Govs, put pressure on Southeast and grabbed a 15-13 advantage on the Redhawks. But a big block by Holly Reynolds and Karlee Lursen kept the Redhawks within one in the middle portion of the frame.
 
The two teams would battle for an advantage late, as the Lady Govs capitalized and jumped ahead 21-18 late in the frame. A huge block by Emily Coon and Lursen tied the match at 22-22.
 
The Redhawks found themselves down 24-22, but Coon and Lursen each added clutch kills to tie the match once again this time at 24-24. Each team battled to find position to win the set, but neither team could find the winning point until Coon saved the Redhawks from losing game point. Southeast would then use an error and a block by Kelsey Keeve and Reynolds to take the second set 33-31.
 
“We did a great job of helping out, and we swung away and we did not play scared in that set and we were aggressive,” said Folliard.
 
Each team came out firing in the third frame as the teams exchanged leads. The Redhawks were on fire early hitting .333 to open up the third set. Southeast earned the first lead larger then two in the set as the Redhawks opened up a four-point lead at 14-10.
 
The Redhawks built a 17-12 lead in the set, but the opportunistic Lady Govs cut the Southeast lead to 17-16.  The Lady Govs would later tie the match at 18-18.
 
Austin Peay would take the lead at 21-20, but the Redhawks tied it at 21-21 as the match would play similar than the set before as the Lady Govs would take a 24-22 lead late. But the Lady Govs shut the door on the Redhawks taking the set 25-23 and taking a 2-1 match lead.
 
 The Redhawks jumped out to a 9-5 lead early in the fourth frame. The Lady Govs would cut the Redhawks lead to 10-9. Southeast would make a run of their own jumping back out to a four-point lead at 13-9.
 
The Redhawks built a six-point lead 21-15 late in the set. Southeast would add to the lead and a block by Coon gave the Redhawks a 25-16 set win and sent the match to a fifth set.
 
The Redhawks jumped out to an early 4-2 run in the fifth set. The Lady Govs battled back and tied the match at 5-5. Southeast then used a four-point run to take a 9-5 lead.
 
Austin Peay would stick to the script and come back once again and cut the Redhawks lead to 9-8. Southeast used a kill by Kalinoski to build a three-point lead at 11-8. The Redhawks would not slow down and finished the match with a block to take the fifth frame 15-9 and the match 3-2.
 
The Redhawks hit .205 on the night. They had a season-high 17 bocks and tied a season-high with 94 digs.
 
The Redhawks were led by Shives, who had an outstanding night directing the Redhawk offense with 48 assists. Shives also added a career-high 23 digs. Kalinoski also had a career-night with 17 kills.
 
Coon led the Redhawks with 10 blocks.  She recorded four solo blocks, she also added eight kills.  Keeve tied a career-high with 10 kills, she also added five blocking assists. Lursen had a solid night adding 15 kills and 15 digs.
 
“Kelsey did great and swung away immediately, she didn't play like a freshman and she took a lot of second balls and she was great at the net for us tonight,” said Folliard.
 
The Redhawks will be in action tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m., CT. as Southeast heads to Tennessee State to take on the Tigers.
