MOREHEAD, Ky. –
A late Morehead State goal snapped a 1-1 tie and sent the Southeast Missouri State soccer team to a 2-1 loss on Friday night.

The Eagles' (6-4-1, 2-1-1 Ohio Valley) Lindsey Oettle scored with 15:36 remaining to hand the Redhawks (8-3-1, 4-1 OVC) to their first conference loss.

Southeast statistically dominated the first half of play, owning a 12-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes. However, the Eagles drew first blood in the 26th minute when Brittany Kiracofe fired a shot from about 30 yards out to the top corner, giving MSU a 1-0 lead.

Undeterred, the Redhawks continued to put pressure on the Eagles' defense. Ali Bauer finally put one home in the 41st minute when she fired in a rebound off a Jacey Boyko corner kick to tie the contest up at one apiece going into the break.

“We were pretty sharp in the first half,” Southeast head coach Heather Nelson said. “Our intensity was good and we created a number of good scoring opportunities. However, it would have been nice if we scored more than the one goal with the opportunities we had.”

MSU weathered the storm in the second half and actually outshot Southeast 7-4 in the final period. Oettle snapped the tie in the 75th minute by chipping in a shot off a deflection from Ali Hawksford.

The Redhawks generated a pair of corner kicks and shots in the final 15:36, but were unable to find the back of the net for an equalizer.

“I give credit to Morehead State for coming out with intensity in the second half and creating the go ahead goal,” Nelson said. “I expect that we will come out with a lot of character at Eastern Kentucky on Sunday.”

Southeast outshot Morehead State, 16-12, overall and corner kicks were 7-2 in favor of the Redhawks.

Ashton Aubuchon played all 90 minutes and made two saves. Friday night was the first time in five matches that the Redhawks have allowed more than one goal.

The Redhawks return to the pitch on Sunday when they travel to Eastern Kentucky. Opening kickoff is at noon CT.
